I saw people recommend Yoav Ben Dov's book- but others say its not the traditional way of reading TdM So any advice on books/ YouTube channels or any other available material for a total beginner would be highly appreciated

iofthebeholder Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 "Mystical Origins of the Tarot" by Paul Huson offers a lot of interesting history (some of it speculative) and information as to how TdM meanings came about, finding it a useful resource in my own quest to learn the TdM. Would also recommend Jodorowsky's "The Way of Tarot", although he obviously has a lot of very idiosyncratic ideas entirely of his own invention, I find considering his thoughts and methods constructive. As with any sort of Tarot reading ultimately you have to digest a lot of info and synthesize whatever makes sense to you into an individual approach that you can confidently own.
Barleywine Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 (edited) Ben-Dov is great, Matthews is very good, Jean-Michel David is also excellent, Jodorowsky is thought-provoking but kinda wacked (go watch his old films El Topo and The Holy Mountain to see just how much), Cherry Gilchrist's TdM book on the trumps was worthwhile, Camelia Elias's book I found forgettable and Enrique Enriquez is a fine teacher but his Tarology book garners mixed opinions. Sherryl Smith of Tarot Heritage I know from the Tarot History and Tarot de Marseille Facebook pages. When we were back on AT one of the resident scholars told me there is no established historical tradition for reading the TdM. I've recently been down the same road you're on, and spent a good deal of time developing my own interpretive bases for the TdM pips. I was fortunate to have Lee Bursten to bounce my ideas off and gain encouragement from.
