katrinka Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 Yes! Music is an art, reading cards is an art. We're outsiders, in a way. It all comes from a similar mindset and life path. I don't know if I explained that adequately, lol. But I think you know where I'm coming from. 😉
AeonHorus Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 I suppose this is why we have sayings such as "to each their own" because what works for one doesn't necessarily work for the other/s. When I was younger say from 13 years old till 30 music was never off in my bedroom/flat/house morning noon and night. On my walkman as I roamed the streets to and fro, when I got home (I didn't own a tv till I was in my 40's lol then that was a PC monitor) and even in bed I had music playing. We woke to music, we slept to music, we ate to music and made love to music. But then one day, and I am not even quite sure when it happened but the music sort off got less and youtube and documentaries started to take over lol. I still have 500+ GB of MP3's and I still listen to music often, just not as often as I did. But lets say I was listening now as I type these words, my mind would drift and it would take me 3 times longer to have typed what I put down here. But that is just me. Lets say something manual though such as the washing up or laminating cards and cutting them out, or some other modification etc then the music in the background would help and make it (seem to anyway) go twice as quick. So with me any sort of physical labour then yes music helps but with any sort of mental activity then the music will distract me from the job in hand.

Omg I love it! I love dissonant strange classical pieces I will be digging into this guy's work more in the future. Yeah I really can't focus on Tarot with loud music or too many words going on, the words get in my mind or I notice when the music is picking up in energy, I need something that is pretty even and balanced with it's energy that just kind of moves along, not sooo sleepy that it puts me to sleep though haha that's why meditation stuff is usually a little TOO low energy. Someone I've found that is pretty good though they are a little too low energy and drony sometimes is Ani Williams. She does egyptian ancient sounding harp music, pretty great though after a while it starts to all sound the same, for studying Tarot though it's good. Cool Alice Cooper vid @katrinka. 🙂

Apologies for a bit of thread drift, but was vinyl still the main medium when you were younger? And those old stereos and hifis that had to warm up a bit before they played? I do miss analog and tube amps. It was a "warm" sound. Digital sounds thin and chintzy in comparison. I still enjoy music - a lot - but there IS something missing these days. Just putting that out there because it might have something to do with why you're not listening as much.

And even the Marines allow for things like tattoos. well...ALL algebra is war to me 😉. but i get what you are saying On 3/31/2020 at 1:07 AM, katrinka said: I don't envy you, not even a little bit. Having memories of a DI dad is probably EXTREMELY helpful. But I imagine you choose your battles. well, I reduce the possibility for battle using my discipline system...and tons of mutual respect. It is a many faceted system that has taken years to develop, and that changes with every new group. The best thing I ever learned was to be flexible, but not breakable...and i play drums, the biggest, loudest weapon!!

It was still very much a thing when I was in elementary school, though the transition to CDs started around that time too for me. I remember dancing around to my Dad's collection of ABBA and Boney M vinyls. And I do agree, that crackly warm sound that you get from vinyl is pretty special. 8 hours ago, katrinka said: I still enjoy music - a lot - but there IS something missing these days. Great music, created from the soul seems less available than it was (not in all genre's maybe but certainly in Pop- though I'm talking in generality). I still listen to music a lot, but it seems to be 'older' music from back in the day. I've been listening to Country music a lot more lately too. 👩🌾

Deliciously spooky stuff like Johnny Cash's Long Black Veil. Loretta Lynn songs about not taking any s*** off of hubby. Tammy Wynette, who actually SANG like a pedal steel. Etc. I don't care for the new stuff. There's still amazing country being made, but it's not charting in a big way. (Check out Cody Jinks, Hippies and Cowboys and Must Be The Whiskey. You won't regret it. 😉 ) The stuff I don't like is the stuff on the radio. It is, as Tom Petty once said, "bad rock with a fiddle". And a drawl. And a FORMULA: "I work hard all week and on Saturday night I drink beer and ride in my pickup truck and holler at pretty girls in cutoffs. America hell yeah. Flag. Tailgate. Boots. Dirt road. Argle bargle." I hope those girls give him the finger. 😁 And the ladies don't take hubby's girlfriend to Fist City like Loretta did anymore. They just murder him.

And those old stereos and hifis that had to warm up a bit before they played? Yes and Yes... Put you in the picture I was 49 yesterday scuse me (AAAAAAAARGH!) thats better. My first record player was one of those you could pile 5 or 6 singles on one on top of the other and they would drop down and play the next one once one had finished, but they scratched your records big time so no one EVER used that facility lol. Back in the day when Stereophonic (1970's) was the new tech, even before Hi-fidelity (1980's) was the thing. On mum n dads "music centre" when they were out, because that had a record player, a tape deck (2 decks to do tape to tape recording if you were really rich) and a radio, AM-FM-LW/SW. But hey what a rush when you found that old 7" single that was RARE as F*(K for a quid in the charity shop n stuff eh 😉 EEEEE them were't days lass. All that is lost now with MP3's. It was there for a short while with blogspot and rapidshare finding a treasure trove of other peoples vinyl rips and uploads, That was akin to being in a second hand record shop, but even that has gone by the wayside now, with the advent of iShiteTunes, Spoffify and other bollox such as... Hahahah My first ever single I bought was Little Jimmy Osmond - Long Haired Lover from Liverpool 🙂 cost me 17p that I'd saved up in an old sock under my bed for two whole weeks to buy it 😄 I was 3 years old when I bought that!!! and I used to play it constantly and sing it to me mum lol

Too True!!! I lost all my tapes and stuff many years ago but yeah I had loads of tapes from friends who chose out tracks from their collections that they guessed you would like... That's a true friendship, that verges on love when you all gel well with tunes!!!

xTheHermitx Posted April 4, 2020 Posted April 4, 2020 I just brought home all of my dads early 70's era stereo stuff (they are getting ready to move and "purging' at the house), and haven't listened to albums since the mid 80's. Gonna get all of this stuff set up here in the next couple of weeks and see what happens. I was never anti-CD, mostly b/c I was in the recording industry back then as digital was coming in, and I was "used". to the change, and understood why it was happening from that perspective. Yes, vinyl sounds warmer, but CD's - or cassettes, or reel to reel, or streaming - can sound just as good with the proper EQ, and speaker/amplifier set up. I get the exact same aural enjoyment from my Dave Brubeck Time Out CD as I do the original pressing that I have from my dad. The original pressing has some "mojo" from being from the original era, and dad bought it the week it came out etc. etc... it also has personal sentiment b/c he used to sit me on his lap behind the drum set, and put his hands over mine, and make me "play" the hands part to Take 5 while he did the pedals. I was like 3 or 4. So when I see that album cover, it brings a ton of warm fuzzies. That is what set my life-path going I think you can find great music now-a-days, you just have to look the opposite direction of the mainstream. Mainstream music is meant to be disposable, and background...but I add at least 5-10 new artists each week that -to me- have TONS of street cred, great music, and great mojo...I just have to dig for it. I honestly still find good music like I used to: word of mouth; underground punk zines; and tape trading....and I like the dig...i like sifting through stuff and searching

He is indeed. But BAD country can be classic too - we have two compilation CDs in the car that I put together for my partner - called "His Really Bad Country CD" and "His even Worse Country CD". They are GREAT on long drives, they really are. I wouldn't read with them as backing, though. I'd rather do classical. Karl Jenkins is good.
