Aldor44 Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Hey all! I am a novice in astrology ( took a few lessons) and at the moment I am not very interested in going too deep into it- since it is very time consuming I do however, want to better implemet astrology into my tarot readings - especially to gain another layer of understanding the majors and court cards . So , I am looking for a good source to gather that info ( a reccomanded book/ forum/what ever) If you have ideas- Would LOVE to hear them thank you!!!
Rose Lalonde Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 (edited) In the beginning the single biggest help for me was to see the astrological correspondences in front of me while doing the reading instead of stopping repeatedly to check for each card. If you don't have a deck that includes the astrological symbols on all of the cards, you could either write them on an old deck or make note cards to place your cards on top of, like placemats. Are you planning to use the correspondences for the Golden Dawn/Waite-Smith/Thoth? If so, if there are any card correspondences that you don't already know, you could pull from a page like this or from Tarot Correspondences by T. Susan Chang, which actually covers a lot more than just astrology but has astrology tables for all the cards and a relatable, short intro on applying correspondences in your readings. Since these decks were created using classical astrology, you might also like skyscript.co.uk. Or if you've been enjoying modern astrology and prefer to add Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, you might like Kenner's Astrology and Tarot. (I don't have that one, so can't comment, but I've talked with someone who likes it.) Chang's book also references the modern planets in places along with the Golden Dawn correspondences. (Of course, if you're going a different route like Journey Into Egypt, Celestial Tarot, or another with unique correspondences, you'd obviously want to skip the above and go with the deck creator's info, but you could still create note cards if needed.) Rodney Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 (edited) rachelcat attached Word files for the three major Astrological Associations (Golden Dawn, PF Case and CC Zain) in this thread over at Aeclectic that you may find useful. My first deck was the Mythic Tarot and I could never figure out why its Courts didn't line up with those from other decks. Turns out it uses the PF Case attributions. I've read the Kenner book and really liked it. Anthony Louis' Tarot Beyond the Basics has a chapter that deals with astrology and tarot. Edited December 21, 2019 by Rodney
Aldor44 Posted December 21, 2019 Author Posted December 21, 2019 thank you @Rodney and @Rose Lalonde! Since I don't even know the plant properties and such just correspondences wont help me I am also looking for a source that will connect the two for me without me having to delve deep into astrology- if it is at all possible
Rodney Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 Chapter 2 in Louis' book is titled "Astrology 101 for Tarot Readers". He explains what each of the planets represents and gives keywords and properties for the signs of the zodiac. He also discusses Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable properties. And he goes over the 36 decans (associated with 2-10 of each of the Minors). All in 43 pages. That info is more spread out in Chang's book, but it's still there. Kenner's book probably goes the deepest into those areas. 296 pages, it includes all the info from the other two, but also shows you how to apply tarot to astrology, showing examples of associating tarot cards with the different positions in a natal chart and how to interpret those cards based on the planet and sign with which they're associated. I think she does a great job of explaining how the astrology affects the interpretation of the tarot card. My knowledge of astrology is much like my knowledge of French, Italian and Spanish. I've studied each language for at least a year, but wouldn't say I'm fluent in any of them.
Aldor44 Posted December 21, 2019 Author Posted December 21, 2019 Thank you once again @Rodney Could you please give me the names of the mentioned books?
Rodney Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 Tarot Beyond the Basics - Anthony Louis Tarot Correspondences - T Susan Chang Tarot and Astrology - Corrine Kenner
Aldor44 Posted December 21, 2019 Author Posted December 21, 2019 thank you- so You would suggest I start with the last of the 3 right? I gives all the basics I assume
Rodney Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 Kenner is the most comprehensive of the three. I think one could start (and stop) there and be quite happy if one is looking for an in-depth discussion of how tarot and astrology can be used together. The other two books are much more introductory in nature. If all you want is a good introduction, either of them would be fine. I would probably go with Louis over Chang because I've read Louis while I haven't read Chang yet. (It's on my ever growing list of when I have more time books and decks.
Barleywine Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 The Anthony Louis book Tarot Beyond the Basics is an excellent source on many fronts, and I recommend it wholeheartedly (with a nod to Rodney for his earlier recommendation to me). I liked Kenner's book up to the point that she started diverging too deeply into her own personal system, since my foundation lies with the Golden Dawn, Aleister Crowley and Paul Foster Case. I've hesitated to buy Chang's book because it seems to be mainly an inventory list of correspondences without much essay material (unless someone can change my mind?). As far as putting tarot and astrology together in practical usage, I found the Golden Dawn's astrological spread far too iterative and a case of way too much information, so I created my own stripped-down version: https://parsifalswheeldivination.com/2018/03/05/personalizing-the-astrological-spread/
