Royalalbatross Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Hello everyone! Hope you're all well. Not sure if I am in the minority, but I actually like tarot cards that are used for both reading and gaming. There is symbolism there too (e.g. even the Kings could be beaten by Death or by the Judgement, and the Fool does not follow the conventional rules). I don't do gaming often though, and I usually only do readings for myself and my wife. Anyway, I got interested in the "Piedmontese" decks, and I was wondering if anyone has some of these that they are especially happy with? I especially like the look of this one, but I could not find it anywhere. Does anyone know where to look for this? I know that there are others out there of course.
53rdspirit Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Tarocchi Piemontesi manufactured by Armanino, Rome, c.1965. I found examples/info here: https://www.wopc.co.uk/italy/piemontese/index In the past, I found most of my vintage decks on e-Bay and the former Aeclectic Tarot. I still scout around e-Bay from time to time, a little on Etsy, and this site (TT&M) is another option.

Do you have any decks like that? I have only seen pictures online.
53rdspirit Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 I have one, the Ancient Tarots of Liguria-Piedmont (1995) Lo Scarabeo; however, I see this and others for sale here: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=piedmont+tarot&_sacat=0 I can post some pics of my deck, if you'd like.

Sure thanks! Do you have any of those that are "double sided" like the one I showed above? I'm attaching some images from another interesting deck (also impossible to find, apparently) Edited March 24, 2020 by Royalalbatross
53rdspirit Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 My deck is not the double-headed style; however, others here may be of more help in that regard. 🙂
Royalalbatross Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 OK I ordered Tarocco Piemontese (Red), from Modiano. Will let you know what I think. But It would be interesting to hear from others too :)
gregory Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 I am trying to identify one that features in wall hangings of old Italian photos in my local coffee shop (the staff have no idea). It seems Piedmontese but isn't double headed and is a lot like the one from the OP otherwise. 53rd - could you post images ? I would go and take photos but right now....
53rdspirit Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 (edited) @Royalalbatross, like I mentioned, no double-headed. @gregory, are there any cards in particular you'd like to see? Here are some of them. Edited March 24, 2020 by 53rdspirit Added cards
gregory Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Oh. No that's fine - that one I have - and yes, it's lovely. In the one in the coffee bar, the images are much more modern - in style like the one in the OP - but not double headed. It's weird and it is REALLY bugging me that I can't go and take photos.
kudos91 Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Have you take a look at il meneghello Facebook page and website? They have done some pretty good reproduction of historic decks
gregory Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 Yeah - not to mention I have most of theirs too. But it is sort of modernish looking and none of theirs are like that. I am going to email Nero head office, as I just discovered they pride themselves on making every store different in appearance !" So they MIGHT manage to supply a picture of the pictures, like...
gregory Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 I quote: Quote Thanks for getting in touch. Regarding your enquiry, I will forward this onto out Brand Team to look into. However, given the circumstances I do not know when/if they will be able to assist.
Royalalbatross Posted April 1, 2020 Author Posted April 1, 2020 The Modiano Tarocco Piemontese deck arrived a few days ago. Positives first: the cards are definitely easy to shuffle if you like cards that "flow" over each other. They are pretty colorful, with a limited palette of strong colors. I love the look of the King of Swords (similar to the image above). Interestingly the Knights look like they are 2 men and 2 women. The double-sidedness definitely makes it easier if you like tarot gaming or don't use reversed readings. Of course, it also means that you often get a smaller, and often cut, image. Some cards are still not exactly the same both ways though. Negatives are that the print looks a bit cartoonish if you look closely (like comics from the 80s, with dotted colors). The cards are a bit on the thin side, but they don't feel flimsy either. Definitely not for everyone, but I like cards in general so I'm glad to have it in my collection. This is the type they use for games in cafes in Italy today. I'll probably pull them out for a game of tarocchi one of these day, when we're allowed to meet people again :)

I like the Hermit, he looks chill. 😄 What really strikes me is that this Valet looks old, older than the royals. We don't normally see that in Tarots. And this King - is he blind in one eye? Drunk? Brain injured? These might be caricatures of real people...
Royalalbatross Posted April 1, 2020 Author Posted April 1, 2020 Not to mention the two people next to the devil. They seem like .....they’re a bit into it 😉
