Ealasaid Enfys Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 (edited) I started the Halloween/Reading Group yesterday. I decided to turn over one card a day. Today I did the 2nd card: The Rats in the Basement - The secrets you keep from yourself. I pulled the Wheel of Fortune in the Housewives Tarot. Now how would you guys interpret the Wheel of Fortune as secrets I keep from myself? I get the card: luck, change, ups and downs. A positive card. The only way I see how to make it work, is to interpret it like I have to face the fact that life comes with up and downs, I just have to accept fate. Something I have always struggled with. Or is it more like "Hey, psssst, I'll let you in on a secret: you have the right to be lucky too!"? I don't know... (sorry for the huuuuuuge picture, can't make it smaller) Edited October 25, 2020 by Ealasaid Enfys
Wyrdkiss Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 I love spreads with interesting positions, so I'll weigh in on this. "The secrets you keep from yourself." The wheel of fortune here may indicate an inconsitency in your perspective. A tendecy to look at the bad, rather than the wheel holistically. In essence, are you forgetting that good things can happen too? I am not sure if this resonates, but a "shadow position" such as Rats in the Basement can indicate the misaligned totality with a cards as varied, yet positive, as the Wheel. Helpful, or way off in your opinion?
Decan Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 The Rats in the Basement - The secrets you keep from yourself: the Wheel This position seems to refer to what works against you while you aren't aware of it, the rats are in the basement. Your card clearly refers to luck and unexpected opportunities. Just an idea: self sabotage? Do you think (or don't want to think) that you don't deserve to be lucky, and possibly you can ruin yourself the opportunities you can have (this can be something unconscious)?
SparklePuffy Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Secrets you keep from yourself - you have a big "destiny" to fulfill, and perhaps at the moment, it seems intimidating or even impossible. Dare to think big.
aries_dreaming Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 I’ve always seen it as a reversal of luck or a change in perspective. But secrets you keep from yourself is an interesting interpretation.
SparklePuffy Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Hi @aries_dreaming oh I thought "secrets you keep from yourself" is the position. I usually see Wheel as a sort of magnifier of the circumstances - small actions might have great consequences due to the timing. Just brainstorming...
aries_dreaming Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 Oh, you’re right. Apparently I can’t read.
LeFou Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 LOL, neither can I - but at least we can read cards 🙂
Ealasaid Enfys Posted October 26, 2020 Author Posted October 26, 2020 Thank you all for your help. @Wyrdkiss, What do you mean by "the misaligned totality with a cards as varied, yet positive, as the Wheel." My English isn't that good. I see the tendency to look at the bad and I think it's connected to what @Decan mentioned. Self sabotage is the word I was looking for. But I know myself to think like that and I've been working hard on that the last couple of months. So why is that a secret then? It's like the card is saying: "Oh girl, you think you're making progress but you still have sooooooooooooooo much work to do. You have no idea." Blèh 😏 @SparklePuffy I'm hoping for this one to be true. I wonder what my 'destiny' could be. I don't know how to explain it, but lately I have been feeling like there's more to my life than now is the case. Or there COULD be, if only ... So maybe that's what the card is telling me. That there's more potential for major (karmic) events. More action, more...
Wanderer Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 To me, the Wheel of Fortune is not about good luck or bad luck, but about the nature of fortune itself: its unpredictability. In this position, one option is that it suggests that you like to feel in control - that you can dictate events through planning and being prepared. The secret is that sometimes this control is an illusion... we are at the mercy of events that happen all around us, pushing us one way or another, but still we like to think that everything is going according to plan. Alternatively, this card in some decks is explicitly about destiny and fate, which is almost the opposite of chance; they are the two ends of the same spectrum, after all, so both meanings are potentially there. In that case, the card in this position would suggest that you like to believe there is a plan for your life, and a path that you "should" be following... when the reality is that we make our own paths into the unknown future, and have responsibility for the road we follow... Not sure if either makes any sense to you, but these large-scale interpretations are what I'd be looking at - and your intuition should help you to identify if one of the above is the meaning you were meant to receive!

I think you nailed it there. Sometimes we don't have as much control over a situation as we like to tell ourselves. A lot of things don't come down to free will, but blind luck or "the slings and arrows of fate." They're out of our hands and it's not something we like to dwell on.

Blèh Lol yes, but it's a Halloween spread and the position says that there are rats in the basement, not how many. Likely due to the hard work you did on yourself the last couple of months, there are now only a few rats (not hundreds), and possibly they are sick, in bad state, not able to do much harm 🙂 Edited October 27, 2020 by Decan

I imagine it's just one big fat giant rat and I'll starve it to death!

I used Google Translate for this one, but I mean that we have the power to make our life and positive energy goes a long way. But then stuff happens - out of our control - and we're on the downside of the Wheel again. And at some point you're all out of options and no idea hpw to turn the situation. Nowadays I'm more of a laissez faire-person. Que sera, sera. Some things are indeed out of our control, but in the end there's a solution for (almost) everything. A lot of problems resolve themselves. And as for that rat in the basement, see previous post 😀 Edited October 27, 2020 by Ealasaid Enfys

Greetings Ealasaid Enfys A quick recap of my rather confusing wording above: The totality, the complet view, of the Wheel of Fortune is that is covers both perceived, "positive" and challenging unfoldings in our lives. The general twist is from my study is that it implies usually a better turn for the seeker, as they are often asking when in time of need. Thus the card is varied, but generally taking a positive turn. I suggested to consider you are misalinged with the "bigger picture" and, as you said, not seeing the better aspects of the card. The "best possibilities", so to speak, are boxed up with the rats int the basement. You hit the nail on the head, a self-sabotage perspective. You appear to be benefiting from everyone's considerate input. I'm glad, and your English is fantastic!
Ealasaid Enfys Posted October 27, 2020 Author Posted October 27, 2020 Hi Wyrdkiss, I understand it better now and I think your explanation about sums it up. I've never studied this card before, so again thank all of you for your much appreciated input. Very interesting turn of the Wheel.
