Hello everyone!

 

I haven't been involved in a good lively old-fashioned forum in far too long, and I'm very glad to be here. I've played with tarot off and on for a number of years, after watching the tarot episode of Xena: Warrior Princess in college and immediately thereafter buying my first deck (Robin Wood - to be assiduously hidden in my conservative Christian family home).

 

This past fall I decided to get serious about knowing the tarot (a quarantine project of sorts). Since completing an online course I've been doing semi-regular practice readings online and am acquiring new decks at a steady clip, lol. Looking forward to lots of discussion here. I'm particularly interested in feminist approaches to tarot.

Curiosity arose...what do you mean by feminist approaches?  Do you mean an intuitive approach or working with feminine decks or something else? 

 

And just a random get to know you question, what's your current favourite deck?

Honestly, the whole shebang - I love the whole continuing and historical conversation and just hearing and seeing how different people have put "feminist tarot" into practice. I love a good geek-out over the decks feminists have come up with over the years, especially the older ones - the whole range from simply making the figures in the cards all-female to making radical changes to structure of the deck. Or how some found no changes necessary, and instead worked on putting an explicitly feminist lens on the RWS (e.g. simple example but things like, the original Feminist Tarot book says the emperor represents not simply authority, but patriarchy). And more generally, discussion of how readers with feminist beliefs can serve ourselves and women querents in a...hm, politically informed way? If that wording makes sense. Politically in the sense of the grand scheme of societal power dynamics and their fallout, not like, "I'm gonna encourage this female querent to run for office," lol.

 

And I have been all wrapped up in the Golden Art Nouveau deck for the past few months - they feel less flat than the RWS in terms of composition, but they retain almost all the details. Plus, the gold, obviously. 🤩  My weak spot! What about you, @stephanelli?

Nice!  I love how passionate you are about it too! 😊

One of my favourite decks is the Triple Goddess Tarot which has predominantly female figures in it (partly why I asked the question!). It has a few male figures the main one I can think of off the top of my head is the Emperor, but not many.

That is a lovely version of the RWS.  I'm currently obsessed with the Witches' Wisdom Tarot by Phyllis Curott and Danielle Barlowe.  I'm still learning my way around it as it is very different to the decks I've worked with, but it's so good!
