Strength8 Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 I have pulled this card (Rider Waite based) for timing a few times in past few days. After googling timing methods: it can be read as in four weeks or sometime after that depressive phase lifts (Picture appears to be of a person apathetic towards everything around them) Any input and/or experience you all have on calculating timing when you pull four of cups? Thanks!
devin Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 (edited) Well, I don't RWS much, but the 4 of Cups doesn't strike me as the speediest of cards. Also, if we link it to water, then it represents the second slowest element. So, if you've got a time frame on the question, I'd definitely read the card as showing something toward the end of the period, or at least past halfway. Edited December 12, 2021 by devin
katrinka Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 (edited) Yep. IME, I haven't found the card numbers to be useful. At all. As for those lists that say "This card is four weeks, that card is six months, this other card is 24 hours", forget it. A court case will drag on a lot longer than a head cold, there's context to consider. It's a slow card. That guy can't be motivated to take a drink, much less do anything else. So you put that in context and go with about 3/4 of the possible timeframe if the neighboring cards support that. If it's attended by cards indicating stasis or stalemate, go with the maximum time. Strength8 Posted December 12, 2021 Author Posted December 12, 2021 @devin & @katrinka that makes lots of sense to me! Thanks I will keep the context in mind along with it being a slow element, moving forward when I am reading cards. There is definitely too much conflicting information out there when it comes to timeframe. May be I need to lay off of timing part of the cards until I learn how to read them at basic level in general readings Thanks again!
DanielJUK Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 If you want to use astrological associations with the card, the 4 of Cups is Moon in Cancer and that is between the 12th to the 21st of July in a year. Using timings with the suits is disputed, people have different methods. But Cups as months are the second slowest behind Pentacles that are years. Although like I say people have different methods of doing it. Also as seasons Cups can be Autumn but some people have different methods with that as well. I would say at least 4 Months but not a full 12 months.
DanielJUK Posted December 12, 2021 Posted December 12, 2021 As we are discussing the timing associations of the card generally rather than applying it as a personal reading of @Strength8. I have moved this over to the Individual Card Meanings 🙂

All of it is really interesting but gets very complicated to my brain/understanding. It was a personal reading but I also wanted to understand it at individual card (timing wise) so placed here is totally cool, Thanks 🙂 I will jot these times down and see if any of the timings work out by the mid-year 2022 for my reading. Hopefully will remember to update here too

Prepare the soil, so to speak. 😉 There's a disturbing tendency I see in a lot of books, websites, etc. where they talk to new readers like children. There's even a youtube channel where the lady uses sock puppets. 🤮 Just because you're only now starting to learn card reading doesn't mean you have a child's mind or the attention span of a gnat. If something interests you, explore that. Don't let anyone tell you that you have to keep it super basic.

If you're using RWS-based decks, Golden Dawn stuff is required reading: Book T, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, The Book of Thoth (and probably Duquette's Understanding the Thoth Tarot in order to penetrate Crowley's writing, lol) etc. These will explain the correspondences - astrological, Qabalistic, etc.

Thank you for the encouragement!! @katrinka it means a lot to me I am going to start making small notes or keeping track of my personal readings and see how they pan out in the times category 🙂

As well as what Katrinka said, I just search google and look at the attributes of a tarot card, like the 4 of Cups. Some websites have more meanings and things. Wheels and tables of all the dates. To add to the book list, Mary Greer's Tarot for your Self is a great reference book and has astrology for each card. Also @Rose Lalonde made us a wonderful Astrology guide to RWS and GD decks here. Really worth bookmarking, I refer to it a lot! It's really complicated and so take what you need at that moment and leave the rest. There are a lot of methods with tarot timing, so it's worth trying them out and seeing what works best for you 🙂

Margo23 Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 (edited) Everyone sees timings differently. I see Air ~ East Swords as fastest moving and the time of year would be Spring, in my belief. Fire ~ South, Wands still fast but not as fast as air, East and time of year is Summer. Cups ~ Water, West slowing down and time of year for me would be Fall. Pentacles ~ Earth, North and usually slow moving. And winter time. Edited January 6, 2022 by Margo23 Make a correction
