Perdita Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 How would you interpret the moon as an external influence, for example in the celtic cross spread? I've recently gotten it twice in this potition in regards to relationship questions. I know the moon can mean that you might not be seeing things clearly or be delusional about the situation. But as an external influence I'm struggling.
Raggydoll Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 It could simply mean that other people is making you more confused in regards to the relationship. This would not have to be deliberate. However, if other cards indicate a more malign situation, then the Moon could represent mental meddling and possibly mind games. Generally speaking, I wouldn’t see it as a positive sign. It might also be worth considering that perhaps the external influence is referring to unhelpful tarot readings.
Grandma Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 @Perdita hi - I think you hit the nail on the head. The uncertain qualities of the Moon is itself the external influence. I came across a wonderful Moon reference in a song written and recorded by a folksinger friend recently. Maybe not an exact quote - “I said your love is like the moon, it comes and it goes. She said my love is like the moon, it’s there when it don’t show”. The Moon is a card of perception. Perception is a strong influence, internal in that it is cognitive and emotional processing but also external in that what we process is often in the world around us. Perhaps this card is telling you that the influence of the Moon may not be what it first appears to be. Examine carefully what is influencing you externally. Could that be the message?
November Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 Hi, The Moon as external influences may simply be referring to things you don't know yet about your relationship, but not necessarily negative ones. Perhaps it's not clear yet how things will unfold between you two. It would be interesting to look at the outcome card.
Perdita Posted November 6, 2022 Author Posted November 6, 2022 @Raggydoll @Grandma @November thank you all for your input. I think the most likely interpretation is that there are things in effect that I don't know about or are unclear. The first spread I did the night before a reconcile meeting. Asking for advice about the meeting. I got the moon in the external influence (8) position in the celtic cross. The spread was pretty dead on how things went. I later did a CC spread asking what I needed to know about the relationship between us for the reminder of the year. Again I got the moon as external influence. Although I think I know what external factors are influencing the situation I might be wrong and the moon is telling me that things are not as they seem.
amanda414 Posted January 28, 2023 Posted January 28, 2023 (edited) Hi. I agree with all interpretations in that things may not be clear. Things are either hidden or scattered 'beneath the surface.' (Note: The Sun brings all hidden things to the surface, and is opposite of The Moon.) And as Grandma pointed out, The Moon is about perception, and the emotional processing of our feelings and situations, hence our emotional reactions to people and situations. The way we perceive people. And since The Moon is in the external influences position in the Celtic Cross spread and rules unforseen circumstances and hidden dangers, it could be highlighting hidden dangers in communicating with others, and warning you to guard your emotional responses against other people. Chariot Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 I started my tarot education with The Moon meaning there are dangers of overactive imagination, neuroses, going slightly mad, etc. However, the more I work with tarot, the more I find the concept of 'you simply can't see what's out there' to be the most useful and applicable interpretation of the upright Moon, most of the time. Especially if it appears in a sector pertaining to external influences, I'd say it probably refers to something you don't know about, or can't see yet. This isn't because there's anything wrong with you or your ability to perceive things, but simply that you can't see properly ...because it's DARK out there and the only light you've got is the unreliable Moon. I would say, if you get this card in this kind of circumstance (external influences), it's a good idea (if you can) to just sit tight and await developments. Sooner or later dawn will break and you WILL be able to see what is now hidden. But thrashing around in the dark is never a great idea, nor is assuming that huge cylindrical 'thing' over there is something sinister from outer space, when it will turn out to be a neighbour's trash barrel, once the sun comes up. The Moon is a good warning to stay conservative (small "C"!) and don't make any changes till you get the full picture. Knowledge is power, and right now there are gaps in your knowledge. The fact that the Moon is a major arcana card would lead me to believe that what you're not seeing will turn out to be important, perhaps even a pivotal point. But circumstances beyond your control are keeping it hidden for now. Just be aware you don't have the total picture at the moment, and act (or don't act) accordingly ...and you should be fine. If the Moon were to appear in a sector pertaining to mental attitude or something like hopes/fears/mindset I would be more inclined to lean towards the 'overactive imagination' or 'delusions, madness' interpretation for this card. But if it appears in a pragmatic sort of setting, such as external influences, I'd take it to mean you just aren't seeing the real picture at the moment.
