KingOfPents Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 Hi all, I'm still experimenting my way through Lenormand and need some help. I was doing a few readings trying to dig through why a person was behaving in a certain way toward me and the Whip card kept showing up repeatedly. It showed up when I asked more pointed questions about the behavior and then when I pulled back and asked questions about the individual's personality it appeared as well. If I were to read this with Tarot and saw a card repeating I would assume I needed to pay more attention to that particular card. Is Lenormand completely context-based and should only be considered among the cards it is pulled with, or do I assume the Whip card was a sign that there was some kind of conflict that this individual was feeling? Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.
joy Posted January 7, 2024 Posted January 7, 2024 Well I think if one card keeps appearing, then I would also pay close attention. But Lenormand has to be read in pairs and in context. So it is difficult to tell you, what it meant. But Whip can be a nasty card, it talks of discord and heated arguments. But it could also mean deep conversations.

Do you think I should pull the Whip card out of the deck, charge it with some intentions, and pull cards around it for more clarity?

Do you want to post a reading so we can see?
DanielJUK Posted January 8, 2024 Posted January 8, 2024 Lenormand has less than half the cards of a 78 card tarot deck and you are always using multiple cards, so I guess statistically you are going to get more repeating. I think this would be interested in certain situations:- - Like @joy said, in combinations. If you keep getting the same Whip and another card pair coming up, that is a repeating message - If you are doing smaller spreads and use the centre card as the core card or focus of the reading, that would be interesting to see it keep coming up in the centre. I presume it means you are probably reading on the same topic or theme - If you are doing Grand Tableau's and keep getting Whip on the same house or maybe always near or in a direction to a house / another card, that would be interesting. Like a repeating spread pattern But if it kept appearing in readings in different places, I don't think it would be that interesting but worth noting it kept coming up. Just see if the message is quite different in each case.
KingOfPents Posted January 8, 2024 Author Posted January 8, 2024 When I did the readings last night, I was lazy and didn't journal them. I took some time today and used the Whip as the focus card. For the audience's clarity, I was around X for several days on a trip with some friends and she seemed to always be standing either physically close to me or at the very least within earshot. We had never met previously, but we found ourselves in the same group for a 3 day tour. When I moved from place to place, she almost put herself in my way so I would have to interact with her, but she never bothered to make any conversation with me. I found the entire thing so bizarre. I asked why the Whip keeps appearing in my readings regarding X's behavior toward me and I got the following cards: Dog, Key, Rider, Ring, Moon I was interrupted in the middle of pulling those cards, so I gave the deck a really good shuffle (or so I thought) when I had another quiet moment and then got the following: Fox, Stars, Rider, Ring, Moon I can't help but think the Whip represents some kind of social anxiety from past interactions gone awry. Both spreads make me think she lives in her head, wanted to create a friendship or some kind of relationship with me, but couldn't act accordingly in reality. The Whip repeating itself is probably indicating there is something deeper to her that causes her to behave this way and social interactions can be quite a bit painful as a result. The Moon is my indication that there is something subconscious that holds her back.
joy Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 Hey @KingOfPents so you did two readings and the last 3 cards were the same, but you think only the 2nd one should be read? Anyway what indeed is interesting is, that the Rider was the center on both those lines. Looking at: Fox - Stars - Rider - Ring - Moon The question was: why the Whip keeps appearing in my readings regarding X's behavior toward me. I would therefore say it appeared as it wanted to deliver a message. According to the original Lenormand sheet, Moon is about reputation, fame and honor. I think X had some sort of hope if she sticks around you, it might benefit her. But honestly I have a hard time as I do not see the spread you got for the question, plus I am not sure if your question should be fully related back to the question: WHY and not mixing it up with WHAT did it try to say.

I was uninterrupted when I pulled the second time which is why that's the one I used to read. Could it be that the Whip is showing underlying anxieties about X wanting to be around me for benefit's sake? Do you think there is a better way to phrase the question? I can pull again for some clarity. It may shed some light on this.

This is why Whip turned up in your reading, you probably found it frustrating that this person was doing this. 😊 I'm not sure why you had to redo the spread? Interrupted or not, the 5 cards were there to be read. Recasting spreads can end up with conflicting answers and leads to unnecessary complexity...

I have such a hard time with Lenormand for some reason, but your logic makes sense. Very cool interpretation.

I'd recommend using Andy B's book and website personally, he has a great way of explaining cards and methods. He also stays true to a more traditional approach. 😊 Do try to keep sources to a minimum while first learning. If you've found one or two you like already, then stick to those until the reading style 'clicks'.

I haven't heard of Andy B or his website, so I'll check that out when I have a free minute tonight. I almost wish I learned Lenormand before Tarot. Very easy to get my wires crossed here. Thanks again!

Rose Lalonde Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 If it's helpful, the kindle version of Andy B's book, Lenormand: 36 Cards, is currently on sale on amazon for $5.62. He's clear and concise and sticks to traditional basics, as @akiva said. You can find a lot of his information online, since he's been generous in sharing (I took a course from him years ago, and all he asked for it was for people to donate to a charity he'd selected.) But the nice thing about the book is that it's laid in order from single cards up to the grand tableau.

I was thumbing through his website on my lunchbreak and it was incredibly helpful.
