Hiya!  This week will be The Celtic Book of the Dead by Caitlin Matthews, illustrated by Danuta Mayer.  I have the older version published by St. Martin’s Press, first US edition May 1992.  (It has been republished by RedFeather/ Schiffer, copyright 2022.)  My version has a large hardback book, smallish cards, and a printed-on-cloth spreadsheet.

The concept is based on the 8th or 9th century Irish story, The Voyage of Maelduin’s Boat, a tale of a trip through the Celtic otherworld, where they visit 33 very strange islands.  These are the main cards.  There are additional 7 “gift” cards and 2 “guide” cards.  The 2 pre-set spreads to use with the spread cloth are an outward passage and a homeward passage with 9 spread positions that are “realms.”

I’m going to try to use it with regular spreads as well as the pre-set spreads.  So let’s give it an interview first and see how that goes.

What is your most important characteristic?  Island of Recognition

The people of the island chase away the voyagers by throwing nuts at them.  They’re afraid without reason.  They’re using their nuts of wisdom incorrectly.

The deck has wisdom but isn’t often noticed.  People don’t take the time to understand it.

What is your strength?  Island of Many Birds

Too many birds = too many choices.

The deck has a lot to offer, maybe too much!

Your weakness?  Island of Invisible Riders

The voyagers hear invisible riders boasting that their horses are the fastest.

Same.  The deck promises too much and fails to deliver on everything.

What can you teach me?  Sea of Glass

Clarity of vision

Even with the drawbacks above, the deck can teach me to look deeper and bring clarity.

How can I learn it?  The Apple

A gift card:  Wholeness and healing

I can learn about seeing clearly by concentrating on the healing possibilities of understanding.

What will be the outcome of our working together?  The Green and Burning Tree

Another gift card:  One side of the tree is on fire, the other side is alive and growing.

Change and choice

This is a good deck to use for reading about choices.  And for readings about what I need to do to change things.

Cool!  I hope that’s true!

Hello @fire cat pickles. I wish to continue this week using the Stained Glass Taroccho for reading now that i did the deck interview.

This week continues Tarocco delle Vetrate. For this week I wanted to mix the whole deck and try a celtic cross type spread even though I usually use Tirage style with my Pip decks and keep Trumps and Minors separate.

Of course my experiment immediately yielded Tower as the outcome card. Eeek!

Here's the photo. I will post the full spread interpretation in my journal ... just in case anyone wants to offer a bit of Tower support *sigh*.

I'll be using the Druidcraft Tarot this week paired with a combination of the Druid Plant and Animal Oracles. Thanks Fire cat!

From the Druidcraft Tarot, the Queen of Pentacles; from the Druid Plant Oracle, Comfrey:

comfrey.jpg
Everything in the universe has rhythm: The rising and the setting of the sun, the ebb and flow of the sea, the coming of the stars, the seasons. They go out in order to come in—rhythmical, measured order.
―Celia Caroline Cole

This Queen of Pentacles plays the bodhran, an Irish frame drum that is thought to have originated from an agricultural tray or sieve. Just as she keeps the rhythm of the music, she is in tune with the rhythms of the earth. She knows it is better to stay grounded in reality than trying to live in a fantasy world. Wearing summer clothes in the dead of winter won't make it warmer, it will just increase one's chances of freezing to death. Staying conscious of what is going on (whether pleasant or not) allows us to deal with it in skillful ways. Comfrey's early function as a poultice can be seen in its folk names - knitbone and boneset. Yet healing can only take place when we acknowledge that there is an injury that needs to be addressed. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." Sometimes we just have to deal with what we've been given.

I got Q pents as advice in my spread. Some of what you wrote  about this card resonates for me as well ... which is funny since we were posting about the same time };>

I'm joining in this week, and I'm pleased to see a Celtic vibe so far in the deck choices. I was going to be using the Celtic Tarot (the Hughes/Down one) but I did a deck interview spread and it turns out the deck most emphatically does not want to work with me at this time (disappointing as I was so excited about it!), so instead I'm using the Druidcraft Tarot. Like Bodhiseed I also have the animal and plant oracles from the same authors/artist, which I think will be useful references as the guidebook for the Druidcraft doesn't go into the animals or plants included in any depth but the oracle guidebooks do.

XXI The World from the Druidcraft TarotI draw a daily card at the end of the day as a Lesson From the Day, and Monday's card (I'm in NZ so Monday has been and gone) was the World. This seems an auspicious start as the end of the journey is also the beginning.

"They're using their nuts of wisdom incorrectly" - love it! Also love the "all mouth, no trousers" vibe of the first set of three cards, followed by the "but seriously though" vibe of the second set, it does sound like the deck's going to have a lot to say this week even if there's a bit of work involved to recognise the nuggets of truth.

Welcome to the group @Luned

The DoW Group is a fun and enlightening way to share how your decks can work for others, to highlight new or unique reading techniques and spreads, and perhaps to introduce new decks for other members.

King of Cups - Druidcraft TarotDaily draw (Tuesday) for Lesson From the Day: King of Cups

This didn’t initially spark any particular connection or thought, I didn’t feel that I was feeling or mastering my emotions more than any other day. However the guidebook suggests that this might represent a “spiritual, therapeutic or cultural project” and I suddenly realised that I had done something out of the ordinary for me in that realm that day and that was joining you all here in DoW. It looks like that has the seal of approval.

There's an exercise in the guidebook to lay all the cards out in concentric circles, minors on the outside circle, to illustrate the wheel of the year. I attempted to do this just with the minors circle and oh boy do you need a lot of floor space (the cards are on the larger side) and a lot of patience! It was nice to see them all at once though, the artwork is really lovely with more muted colours than a lot of my decks.

There's a full moon on Saturday - does anyone have any recommendations for suitable spreads?

More thoughts on my DotW ... it certainly has a tricky, humorous side [Magician from the deck interview].

This week's spread? Using Tarocco delle Vetrate with a Celtic Cross?

I thought I was reading on myself ... but the cards had a different agenda. I had asked the wrong question.

I found interpretations that applied to me ... but Knight coins and Tower bothered me ... they didn't quite fit. Q coins and 7 swords also felt "iffy".

In any case ... the deck gave an accurate prediction ...  I can't blame the deck. It accurately answered the question I should have asked.

My question was "What will things be like for me after T leaves?"

He's not leaving.

Hence the Tower. Sudden, unexpected change of plans [again ... welcome to my life where Tower is just another Tuesday].

Knight coins is the job he had lined-up in Hawaii. He got a bad feeling about it and pulled out of that job. Q coins is me. He wants to stay with me.

7 swords is unfinished business ... which he just described feeling about his life here.

This spread was 100% accurate ... for T. It was never my spread b/c I asked a question that was about to become irrelevant. *sigh*

I remember doing a pendulum 'reading' over niece's belly, asking it if she was going to have a girl. It answered 'yes,' but she had a boy. I should have asked about both possibilities - boy and girl. She indeed had a girl, but years later!

LOL I just don't read gender reveals. I was dead wrong on T's grand-daughter [I said boy]. And T was definitely asking about that pregnancy -- not a future one. I've learned that I'm good at real estate and school questions but bad at gender reveals and lottery numbers. I freely admit this };>

Tarocco delle Vetrate. Tirage en Croix since my Celtic Cross experiment didn't go so well.

I rolled dice to pick the cards. Picture only. Text is over on my journal page.

I will say only that this deck HITS with a Tirage and the deck interview [tirage style]. It doesn't seem to like CC.

Continuing through the week with the Druidcraft Tarot - my daily draw for Lesson From The Day for Wednesday was fine, but then my draws for Thursday and Friday went a little awry. I could just about make Thursday make sense at a pinch (it was the Three of Swords, a very uncommon card for me, and I was preoccupied with what had stabbed my tyre, causing it to go flat on the drive home from work, so sword energy suits), but still stumped as to how the Five of Wands connected to my Friday. For today I’m planning a Full Moon spread but it’ll have to wait until the evening because it is very hot and sunny here and not giving me moon vibes at all!

Hi @Luned! It is frustrating how tarot can be so literal one day and the next, illusive. Sometimes I'll have to wait the next day and do my reading in retrospect. I'm about to do that now, at 4:30 in the morning!

Also, I've updated our OP with the correct information with your deck of choice,  thr Druid Craft 😀
