And I seem to have too much time because I did three interviews already! This is the last week for Halloween decks, and it’s all vampires all the time! Should I be sheepish that I have three vampire tarots? And not even the most popular ones? Nah. I like what I like! Gothic Tarot of Vampires is a Lo Scarabeo deck of contemporary vampires in a comic book style. It has a lot of blood, which is so not my thing, but for some reason, I like the deck and don’t see myself parting with it anytime soon. Vampire Tarot by Robert Place has his wonderful, if rather cold, artwork, along with his great scholarship about tarot and vampires. In addition to a very thorough introduction to tarot, the book includes lots of information about vampire literature in English and explores its connection to tarot (Bram Stoker was the manager of a theater where Pixie Smith designed sets). The illustrations allude to vampire movies, including Underworld and various versions of Dracula but not including Interview with the Vampire or Twilight. And the newest of the three is Tarot of the Vampires from Llewellyn (came out last year, I think). It also shows contemporary vampires but in a more illustrative style and has recurring characters in original storylines across cards. Three interviews today, but then I think I’ll simply do daily draws of three of the same cards the rest of the week. What is your most important characteristic? 8 Wands He has the power to walk on vertical surfaces. The deck isn’t like any other deck, not even other vampire decks. It takes some thought (8=Mercury) to understand the energy (wands) of this deck. What is your strength? 4 Swords The vampire is vulnerable in her sleep. Others have been stabbed through the heart. Is she next? The deck’s strength is in exploiting the reader’s vulnerability. You have to open up your mind to be able to understand it. Your weakness? XIII (Death) This (in a red and white version) is the deck’s back. I told you there was a lot of blood. Ok, that’s the weakness, so much blood. Or it’s a “death where is thy sting” situation. If all the characters live on after death, what’s so important or final about it? What can I learn from you? 3 Pentacles This seems more like the 6 than the 3, giving generously. Unless it’s creating vampires in a very practical, unemotional way. I can learn about generous creativity. How can I learn it? Queen of Swords A grieving vampire widow cries tears of blood. I can learn by teaching. What will be the outcome of our work together? King of Wands This is the illustration of one side of the box. (The other is Knight of Chalices.) So I will get out of it pretty much what I expected from looking at the cover of the box. And/or it will be a growing experience for me. What is your most important characteristic? Ace of Stakes I guess crosses sometimes repel vampires, but they can be used as weapons too. The deck is all about actions and energy. What is your strength? IV Stakes When Mina drinks Dracula’s blood, it’s a marriage of sorts. The deck demands commitment. It grounds (4) the energy (stakes) of the vampire legends to something useable. Your weakness? X Stakes But that can sometimes be overwhelming. We can only see parts of it at a time. What can I learn from you? VI Holy Waters The vampire loves and protects his daughter in blood. It can teach me to care about vampire lore and reading with it. How can I learn it? VII Knives By being sneaky, of course! The creepy vampire sneaks in an open window like a thief in the night. Learning can happen by coming at it from an angle. What will be the outcome of our work together? The World Lots of symbolism here: Mina is an anagram of anima mundi. The wreath combines death and life. She is also Prudence, the “missing” cardinal virtue, as shown by the mirror of self-reflection and the serpent of wisdom. But the serpent is also dangerous. Everything! I will come to a renewed understanding and appreciation of the deck, its underlying symbolism, and the vampire mythos. What is your most important characteristic? The Hermit Love the gargoyle! The deck is good for introspection and searching. What is your strength? Ten of Wands The vampire carries his victim? Lover? Child? Across the city with sheer energy as his wings. The deck is powerful and carries a lot of weight. Your weakness? Queen of Swords I dismissed this deck at first because this is the cover illustration, and I wasn’t interested in a steampunk/Victorian deck. But it’s mostly contemporary, and I like that better! It’s too intellectual? Or it doesn’t portray the queenly and swordsy sides evenly. What can I learn from you? The Hierophant I like the roses and lilies symbolism even though I’m still trying to internalize it. They are the illustration on the backs (one rose, one lily). Note the serpent at the statue’s feet: Prudence’s serpent of wisdom? Or Mary crushing the serpent of evil with her heel? I can learn about how tarot traditions can we reworked and negotiated while staying traditional. I can finally learn my personal understanding of roses and lilies! How can I learn it? Seven of Wands She is enjoying using her power. Reminds me of Buffy. I can learn about tradition and symbolism by putting some energy into it and enjoying that. What will be the outcome of our work together? Four of Pentacles So much security for a vulnerable sleeping vampire: a locking impressive coffin, a safe, lasers, and a guard dog. The deck will help me refine, finalize, and make my own some of my tarot understandings. I’m really liking this deck, and the other two too! Looking forward to a fun week with vampires.
fire cat pickles Posted November 11 Author Posted November 11 Welcome back @PathWalker and @Rachelcat!
Bodhiseed Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Thank you Fire cat! I'm in this week with the PetraK Tarot paired with Astrodice. Our character is basically a composite of our habits. —Stephen Covey This disc hovers between a tree with green leaves and a branch of autumn leaves. Our life is made of changing seasons, when some things in our physical world need more of our attention than others. Home repairs, more sleep, a closer eye on our spending, or addressing health concerns are all part of our own changing seasons. The South Node points out how our experiences have shaped and formed our habits and patterns. The 6th House focuses on daily routines, including our health and wellness. Together with Aries, these dice suggest we make an assertive and energetic effort to change any unhealthy tendencies so that we enjoy a season of well-being rather than tolerate one of discontent and discomfort.

I never thought to use them as a complete oracle in an of themselves. Thanks for posting your technique!
PathWalker Posted November 15 Posted November 15 This is the week of the disappearing deck. I was sure that I had taken the deck out of the box, and put it . . . Hmm. I've been looking for it - next to the bed, next to the commuter, somewhere in the workroom. Somewhere put down in between all those places . . .? It strikes me today that maybe I didn't actually take it out? If it is still it it's box I'll be using the Glastonbury next week
