I'd always heard that your first deck has to be gifted to you and there was no chance of that happening. I eventually took the plunge and bought my first deck myself, and I'm very glad I did, but it would have been nice if I hadn't taken so long to get around to that. I've thought about that one and I remembered all the superstitions around knives, especially pocketknives. I'm not trying to bring up violent imagery here. A knife is a tool, and a very handy one for things like opening packages, removing splinters, removing staples, peeling fruit, sharpening pencils...you get the idea. Anyway, there's a lot of lore around them: "Place a knife under the bed during childbirth to ease the pain of labor", "Don’t let knives cross at the table, it will start a fight", "It‘s bad luck to close a pocket knife unless you were the one who opened it", and this one: "If a friend gives you a knife, give him a penny. This turns the gift into a purchase and will prevent your friendship from soon being broken". It's also suggested that if you gift someone a knife, you should tape a penny to it. That way, they can give you the penny back, and the knife is "purchased." Virtually every superstition has a workaround. If you spill salt, throw some over your left shoulder and "hit the devil in the eye." If you break a mirror, put the pieces under running water. Etc. So to anyone who might actually believe that, why not find a deck you like, "gift" a trusted friend the cost (a little extra for their trouble would be super nice), and let them purchase it and "gift" it to you? "Your first Tarot must be given to you" strikes me as more of a "Thou shalt not" than good, honest folklore. 🤣 I never even heard of it until I was a fairly seasoned reader. It "smells funny", even as superstition. And this is coming from someone who never closes someone else's open pocketknife, and always runs water on shards of broken mirrors. Why take chances? 😁 I'm glad you got past that particular canard. Welcome. And I like your avatar!

And I was on AT before that! :) That's a good point about how this specific thing is so different from other superstitions. Other superstitions tend to have a specific consequence but I've never heard what exactly is supposed to happen if you buy your first deck yourself. Some superstitions have "bad luck" as a consequence but it's usually for pretty common sense reasons: walking under a ladder is a good way to get hurt, mirrors used to be more expensive than they are now, etc.. On the other hand, I don't know how or why this belief exists. I've heard that it's because you had to be taken up by a reader as an apprentice of sorts, but that's so vague! It doesn't say when and where this happened and I can't figure it out based on what I know of the Tarot's history. It wouldn't surprise me if it was total nonsense.

I think these myths work only if you believe in them. If some teacher always tells a person that they have to do specific things to make a tarot reading work and then they believe it, then the readings only work when they do the specific things. Luckily, I learned from lots of books and forums and so I never believed any of these myths. Although technically I was gifted my first deck, but I never really read with it only the one I bought after I decided I didn't like the look of the deck I got. But I guess if you never heard of tarot and there's no technology, usually most readers are gifted or shown a deck before they learn that tarot exists. Edited July 10, 2020 by silentbreeze
Ealasaid Enfys Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 I agree with what @PathWalker wrote. Rituals are everywhere in our lives, from where you put your keys where you come home, watering your plants a certain day of the week (pointing to myself) or lighting a candle for someone. I'm not saying its necessary to do a good reading, but if it helps you to do one, why not? So what if that's magic and not tarot? The ritual shows that you are putting your intentions into it and give it the time you think it deserves. Or you could drink a cup of coffee with every reading and thrive on the energie boost. What's next? You're not going to tell me you DON'T have to pick the cards with your left hand are you? 🙃
gregory Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 (edited) You mean I was supposed to ? Oops. If I had rituals I wouldn't lose things with such monotonous regularity. Edited July 10, 2020 by gregory

katrinka Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Lenormand is good for that, too.https://fennario.wordpress.com/2019/01/28/finding-a-lost-object-with-lenormand/

Ealasaid Enfys Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 Maybe the question should be: is 'the ritual' helping you, or is it helping the cards? If you think it's helping the cards, one could argue it's a myth. @gregory, I think you're the myth here. Disappearing every time I turn my head. Tssss.
Ealasaid Enfys Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 I remember reading that somewhere. Always thought it was a myth.
