There was a great plea by Mary Greer on her Facebook recently that we should start a new myth to buy our first deck for ourselves. As an act of self-empowerment. I think that is great idea and how I got my first deck originally.

One of the tarot myths I remember is that you are supposed to be gifted your first deck - if I had waited for someone to buy me a deck, I would still be waiting. Also decks should be wrapped in black silk, supposedly to stop outside influences.

I like the Centennial PCS, the deck looks vintage and the colours are just right, and it comes in different sizes. I never liked the standard, too much yellow and the so called Original with its limited colours, green water, heavy black outlines - it took me a few years to appreciate that one. One of my other favourites is the Radiant Wise Spirit Tarot, i only have this deck in the mini version in the sturdy box, I love the colours of this one and also the size. When the RWS went into the public domain in 2022(?), for the first couple of years everything was quiet but then different versions of the RWS began appearing, all different colourings, different backs and also very cheap. I caved and bought a few just to see what they were like. I was pleasantly surprised, I now own a vintage looking one, a purple backed one and a black backed one. The colours are good and the card stock handles nicely - they don't feel or look like cheap decks and they also come with mini companion books, not LWB's . Unfortunately, I can't get my hands on the majority of my decks because they are in storage.

Make it so that you can turn Reversed cards off, some people don't use them - I don't so I wouldn't use a tarot app where you had no choice. Also maybe think about using coloured cards, black and white is boring, make a journal feature that will save the readings, also a choice of spreads. I do have tarot apps on my phone, usually featuring my favourite decks and their companion books, Fool's Dog do a good selection of tarot apps, and Labyrinthos, maybe have a look at those for ideas.

I don’t have any problem with anything you said Gregory. You have been helpful. I’m not sure i would classify it as dismissive if i dont have a windows computer. I went to the page, watched the video i.e made every effort to follow up on the info your provided. I don't see how me not going out and dropping a few hundred dollars on a windows pc is being dismissive. That’s actually crazy to suggest. There are plenty of people who don't have a windows machine atm. Probably half the population actually.

I haven’t been doing a lot of readings this week, but paying more attention to my dreams. I noticed a couple of things when I did draw cards: they feature symbols that also appear in my dreams. Yesterday I drew the 9 of Cups for my daily reading and was, for the first time, drawn to the peacock feather in the guy’s hat. The peacock has been an important image in my dreams diary for more than 10 years.

Suggesting that you look at one excellent programme that means I, for one, will need no other, just to get an idea of what features make it so good, and your saying well you can't look at it because you don't have windows is somewhat dismissive. OK you can't assess any windows app. I'm guessing you are looking to mobile users. Fair enough - but there are a lot of tarot users who don't like mobile apps. It isn't a criticism to say find a way to look at what's out there, so that you aren't just reinventing the wheel..

I don't use oracle decks very often. When I do, I usually just pull one oracle card at the end of a tarot reading to add a different perspective. I really like the Vintage Wisdom Oracle deck. The story goes that the creator stumbled upon a collection of antique postcards in France, and used them as the basis for the deck. I think she did wonderfully well. I actually lost my deck somehow during a move. At some point a few years later, I realized I wanted it again, so I ordered another. Thankfully it is still in print. In addition to loving self-collected oracle decks, I like these... My favorite at the moment is the Citadel, since I'm drawn in by the idea of this imaginary city and its rpg-inspired inhabitants. The lwb gives a moment in the life of each. (EDIT: and in has keywords! I forgot I blocked them out for this reading) This Japanese PCS-inspired oracle had keywords I didn't love, but now that it's trimmed I like it Does I Ching count for this when using cards instead of coins or beads? If so, I've loved this deck for years. It conveys the meaning while leaving a lot of space for interpretation. And I just received the Blooming Lovelies by accident (I bought her tarot, but they accidentally shipped this and told me to keep it. Great for a pick-me-up, though I do prefer her take on the tarot more than the oracle that doesn't have that context. She's very positive without ignoring that sometimes a situation just sucks. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My all-time favourite that I have used for years is Medicine Cards, by Sams & Carson. I have the pocket version (OOP) which has short poems written on each card about the quality of the animal. ...I have 3 new decks this year - and I love them all: 1) Oracle de Marseille by Lucie and Raphael 2) Shorelines Oracle (can't remember author...) - great one for grief readings. 3) The Crystal Oracle by Rijswijk and Freeman.

wow well so much for asking about features. I only get criticism that has nothing to do with it. No i dont need a windows machine to start making the app. Guess what i also don't have a linux machine. The truth is that you actually dont need every machine to start building an app. That thinking is from like 20 years ago. It’s already started. You can see a pic. I am well aware that you were talking about Orphalese. When I wrote, "you'll need to test it on a range of devices and operating systems," I was responding to this: In order to develop and test your app, wouldn't you need the equipment to do so? And now you've stated this: I wouldn't even consider starting work on creating an app if I wasn't prepared to test it on various operating systems during the process. How do you plan to do that? I would think that is an important step, if you want it to be useable by the most people possible. Otherwise, aren't you putting the cart before the horse?

That sounds fascinating @Raggydoll . I've never thought of speaking to my ancestors when I am in my sanctuary. But that's probably because I don't have much of a relationship with them. I do speak to my guides though.... and thinking about this now - two of those guides are actually what one would call "ancestors of time" (alla Nancy Hendricks) - because they are actually people from somewhere else on the planet from another time... not related to me by blood. (Generally when people say "ancestors" I immediately think of ancestors of blood, which is what you are talking about here). @Misterei I honour my recent dead - people I have known who have passed on.. One thing I do is set up an ancestral altar (a pop-up altar as it's only up at this time), and put on it a representation of all these aforementioned people (this can be a piece of jewellery that they once owned, a crystal that reminds me of them, a business card of theirs that I still have - etc) and I decorate the alter around the objects. I'll usually then contemplate (meditate on) these items and the people they represent and remember them. I may pray or chant. I may light a candle. I may decide to design and perform a whole ritual with a section speaking directly to them. Depends on what I fancy. As for the full moon. Today - I did an online Tarot reading swap with a stranger, who was referred to me by my brother (for our matching interests in Tarot). We've been chatting on WhatApp for a little while and our first swap was awesome! We've decided to continue with a monthly full moon swap (in or near the full moon). Ideally - I'd love to be celebrating an Esbat (ritual full moon gathering in Wicca) with a group of like-minded people out in the open under Diana - but as yet, I have not found one that I really gel with (well - not entirely true, but the one I loved moved out of London, where I live). Plus the second problem is, if the full moon is on a weekday - I generally can't attend as it's too late for me. Need to be sparkly eyed the next day for work. For my own personal practice - I encompass the full moon, the day before and day after - all as one. This gives me more leeway (diary wise) with doing a solitary full moon ritual if I so wish. In the Wiccan calendar the September Esbat follows on from the 2nd Harvest/Feast of Mabon/Autumn Equinox and is the Wine Moon (there may be other names but this is the one I use). It's Wine harvest time. Here are the grapes in my front yard 🙃. Wine ofcourse - is a traditionally known libation 🍷 If one is celebrating a Wine Esbat - one might consider designing a ritual which invokes (calls upon for support) or evokes (brings to mind) a Wine deity. Though I haven't given it much thought today - except of course for the most obvious deity - Bacchus. It's always interesting to google and read up on these things with each season, and sometimes this might be all that I do on such an occasion.

Strike out "not being entitled" from your brain right now Marina!!! If you see a practice that you like - who says you can't make it your own and enjoy the richness & beauty that it adds to your personal experience? IMO. "Culture" has been mixing, incorporating and intermarrying for Aeons, if you really start digging up the roots of everything as an historian. Look at the RWS for instance - how many cultures are actually jammed into there? Remember, The Golden Dawn's aim was to invent a new and better spiritual path - from mixing the best of a number of ideas from different cultures together.

But you need to be able to see the possibilities and look at all the OSs available. But geoxena's right - birthstones are just too much.

I meant Orphalese is for wondows only, not my app. I was planning on doing ios, mac, pc, android, linux, and maybe steam. I might do a webapp but probably not (im still looking into that one.) I agree thatbOrphalese has a lot of cool features from the video. I dont have a working windows machine at the moment to install it.

Oh gosh, birthstones. Honestly, I would probably roll my eyes and pass on an app that offers choosing my birthstone before a reading. Birthstones have nothing to do with tarot.

Sure - but for the facilities it offers, I'd not want anything more. And as geoxena says - you surely don't want to restrict your app to one OS. Better yet, even make it operable in Linux as well ! But nothing would make me use a tarot app on a phone. Never mind clogging up important things that phones need to do, the screen is just too small. If you are adding birthstones and the rest, it would be just too cluttered a screen. (Not that I have a good smartphone anyway !)

Because I really don't have any clear ancestral… heritage to to speak (to clarify: my family came from a big mix of poor immigrants, of different nationalities & ethnicities, so there isn't a single cultural "thread" that I feel I can call ancestral), I do not feel entitled to any standard rituals or celebration. That said, I do like to take the photos of my dear departed ones - human and animal family -, light a candle in remembrance and thank them for the love and the time shared. I do it on the 2nd of November, which is "Dia de Finados" (the day of the dead) here in my country, because there is a whole collective energy already focused on it. I guess it counts for something, even though it's not anything magical or profoundly spiritual

I would think that if you're developing an app, you'll need to test it on a range of devices and operating systems. Unless you only want to make it for iPhones? I generally don't need to carry a tarot deck with me wherever I go, so I don't use a tarot app. Once in a blue moon, however, I login to tarot.com for a free reading, just for fun. It's an old site, been around for ages, but maybe they have features there that you'd want to use for your app. I access it on my laptop. I personally do not like downloading apps to my phone because having too many can slow it down. I much prefer using websites on my laptop over apps on my phone.

My ancestors have initiated a new type of divination/communication with me recently. I guess you could liken it to astral card readings 😊. I journey to my sanctuary, the place where I consult ancestors and perform magic. And there they have made an altar-like platform with a deck of cards. The cards are like nothing I’ve ever seen before, the images move and scenes unfold inside the cards. I believe each card is unique for every reading, at least so far I have not seen any repeats and they feel very specific for the context of each question. I have understood that the ancestor wishes to guide and communicate with me this way. So it is something I will explore further tonight. I agree that this time of year is particularly conducive to ancestral communication. I also understand why they treat ancestors differently depending on how recently they passed on. I have never had an ancestor who recently passed on, show up as a guide for me. It is a process both for the dead and the living.
