alethian started following Thomson Leng Tarot Deck 1935 Dundee & London
-
I bought this deck a few year ago. It is a reproduction deck, not the original. It is really nice quality deck with good quality stock and colourful printing. Each cards are exactly same as the original cards. I used to have a battered original Thomson Leng deck before this reproduction was bought. But the original deck was sold. Cannot recall how much it was sold for - not much due to poor condition with the age wear on each cards. But because I liked the deck, and regretted selling it, I bought this reproduction deck soon after. But then forgot about it, just leaving it in the drawer for months. A few days ago, I have taken out this reproduction Thomson Leng deck and used it a few times. But the Little White Book included in the deck has different meanings compared to the popular meanings we get from the Golden dawn tarot books or the books by AE Waite and other popular contemporary tarot books. For instance 8 of cups is described as you will marry a good partner, and it is a very good card. 5 of Cups is also good card for extremely good luck. 5 of pence (pentacles) is for receiving unexpected rewards etc. So where do these meanings in TL deck LWB originate from? Do you own this deck? Do you use it at all? What do you think of the difference in LWB meanings in different decks, and how should we use them in the real readings?

Happy solstice everyone! This week for me will be Tarot of the Sephiroth. This was my gateway deck to learning the Golden Dawn system. Before it, relying on The Pictorial Key, I was feeling like I had learned everything I needed to know about tarot. And then boom! My eyes were opened! The art is really quirky, but I like it. As you see, it illustrates the sephiroth of each card on the card, including the paths for the majors. I like how the court cards are each a quarter of their sephiroth’s circle. And, yes, I laid it all out as a complete tree on my bed so many years ago. The deck is now a proud member of my “Golden Dawn Not Thoth” collection. Let’s give it a try! What is your most important characteristic? Prince (knight) of Swords It’s a teaching deck that should be used for learning. What is your strength? The Wheel of Fortune It also has a LOT of symbolism! It can take you where you want to go, with more or less symbolism. Your weakness? Ace of Cups You either love it or hate it. The artwork is definitely quirky. What can I learn from you? Ace of Wands I’ve already learned so much from it! I can learn to act on what I learn, not just store it in my head. How can I learn it? Prince of Disks Two princes and two aces. I can learn to take action on my insights by working on them. Practical, physical actions. What will be the outcome of our work together? Five of Wands I am now in healthy competition with the deck because I’ve come up with my own correspondences (that use some of the same and some not). It will push me toward creating something similar for myself. Wow! That’s pretty positive for a five. So we’ll see about that. -

Thank you Fire cat! I'm in this week with the Wild Unknown Tarot paired with the Pictish Oracle that I created: Listen, are you breathing just a little, and calling it a life? —Mary Oliver This little fellow reminds me of a wood duckling. Only a few days after hatching, the mother leaves the tree cavity and calls for her little ones to jump 40 to 50 feet to the ground. What innate trust they have! The Fool asks us what is calling that would require a leap from our comfort zone. It might be a trip, a new hobby, or reaching out to someone we'd like to become friends with. We need to take these chances so that life will be fulfilling and we'll continue to grow. The Mirror and Comb suggest we take a moment to reflect when we find ourselves stuck rather than leaping. Haven't we spontaneously jumped at opportunities in the past and being rewarded by it? It is worth remembering that we can continue to bloom, no matter what our age or circumstances. -

Cool. Thanks for the heads-up - both of you. Which means I get to look at some simple Lenormand examples on Instagram that I hadn't thought about before. I have attempted learning it a couple of times (on courses) - but so far fail. Perhaps I'm too old, or my heads too full to stuff in anything more 🙃.

I agree. For some it just wouldn't make sense, like the Clover, the Letter, the Fish, etc. Yes I had learned that first from Bjorn Meuris' tips on this website actually: lenormandguild.wordpress.com It's quite a cool thing to note when context calls for it. I agree with you on this as well. I use these cues very sparingly in tableaus and for simple line readings I don't use them often. But I think it's a good little technique to use when a card doesn't make sense in a grand tableau; for example if it's a secret I'm trying to uncover (the Book) instead of using Houses and following the chain I could note the directions if I'm in a hurry, provided that the surrounding cards don't already give me a clear answer. I've made a list of the directions and only these three are left a bit unclear, that's why I'm so stuck on the subject for now, even if I won't be using them frequently, lol. Thank you so much! ❤️✨

Card Directions in Lenormand
WizardintheWoods replied to Moon-Hermit's topic in Lenormand Card Studies
I was taught not all of the cards actually have directional cues. Snake doesn’t in my learning. Snake only has before and after Stork, as Storks eats snakes. Key you have written what I know. I did study working with many directional cues or clues as I heard people talk about them with the various cards. I found that using so many of them muddying the waters of the reading rather then help sorting it out, but that might just be my reading technique. Wishing you luck on your search. -

Preparing to do a tarot reading (for someone else).
Moon-Hermit replied to MouthOfTheLion's topic in Tarot Talk & Technique
I never do anything elaborate to prepare myself before doing readings, be it for myself or for someone else, because the couple of times that I did so it just made it harder for me to interpret the cards for some reason (though of course if you're feeling nervous doing a short and simple breathing exercise beforehand can help). I just sit at my table, shuffle, pull the cards and interpret them; I do a lot of readings for my mom as well and she's quite demanding (she's always excited and wants answers quickly! 🤣) so that's influenced my reading style on a whole, I guess. If I'm doing multiple questions or reading for many people I take a break (maybe fifteen minutes or so) and then come back. Of course if you feel really exhausted it's better to just leave the cards where they are and return when you're feeling like it; I've had a few instances of feeling drained after readings as well, though interestingly they occured mostly when I was reading for people with whom I didn't have a blood connection--- I rarely feel like that afterwards when I'm reading for family or for myself. If you're planning to read cards professionally and charge a price, I think that determining how many clients/how much you could put into it regularly would do you good. I don't, so that's why I'm a bit more easy going in my practice I suppose. -
Hi @DanielJUK, thanks for your reply ❤️ Yes, I'm aware of the fact that they differ from deck to deck (that's why I don't rely on images and for instance just see it as a rule that the Scythe always cuts to the right--- otherwise I'd have to rethink it for every single new deck!) and are used sparingly. I have already went through the threads you've posted and took notes. These three cards specifically are just bugging me a little bit because I couldn't find much about them anywhere 😅...

There are some old threads on the forum with ideas about this. Summarising them..... There is no agreement on the facing directions, apart from Clouds (sunny side / dark side). Each deck does it differently and so you might need to work it out per deck if you want to use them, or notice when doing the reading. Card Directions has become very popular in modern books / decks but are perhaps not the most important thing in a reading, like they might be helpful when you see them but are not the whole reading. Readers use this differently, some more so, some less so. (some of these discussions are about other cards but the later posts are useful generally) This thread begins with a discussion about Signficator card facing but evolves to any directions....

Worth looking at local groups and tarot associations in your country @MouthOfTheLion. They often have meetings and ways of meeting others if you want to do it in person. Otherwise you can now (at 5 posts) offer exchanges here and do join in our monthly reading circles where you can practice with other members -
I really love his books and Belline writings 🙂 I look out for his instagram everyday because he posts a 3 card cartomancy reading with a different deck and I am always like wow 😀 Thanks for letting us know about them @vendrazi

There's a past discussion about the Forest of Enchantment Tarot.... The Oracle only came out in August 2025, so is fairly recent. I don't think there have been past discussions about it, but we can have a thread discussing it now 🙂

I feel like I have seen it depicted in threads, and I tried to do a forum search, but for some reason the search function didn’t work. (I didn’t get any results, even when I searched for ”and” 😁)

I've been trying to find the Forest of EnchantmeOracle here but for some reason, I can't seem to find it. Normally I haven't used oracles hardly at all but I've enjoyed my Forest of Enchantment Tarot so much that I decided I should also have the Oracle. I've been trying to find it here in the Oracle section but haven't found it so far. Does anyone else have it? Surely I'm just not looking in the right place because I can't imagine that nobody else has it.

Lately I’ve been working more with card directions, but a few are still unclear to me. Any help would be deeply appreciated. 1) What does the Snake’s head vs. its tail signify? I guess the tail is the source of the treachery and the head points at what’s she’s biting? But I’m not sure. 2) The Mountain. This one confuses me a bit because most of the time I use the Dondorf deck and there’s no clear open/closed side on the Mountain card (at least to my eyes); or are directions read in another way here? 3) The Key; I already know that it says yes (unlocks) whatever comes before it and affirms the message of the following card as certain (locks), but I’m curious if the cards above and below have any significance as well, like what we see with the Cross, Book and Tower cards?

Serge Pirotte is offering another Intro to Lenormand class this September. 7 weeks, $140. https://www.laetitiacartomancy.com/classes-1/p/learn-lenormand-with-lenormand-expert-serge-pirotte-f8c7m (I’m not affiliated with this class at all, other than as a happy student — I took this class and one on Belline from Serge last year. I’m taking this one again to strengthen my skills — Serge is SO good.)

Thank you @Marina I have the first version of the cards and an accompanying book. I don’t know quite why but the art style turned me off , I don’t mind different or dark, this was something else I couldn’t pin down that turned me away. The Alchemy deck looks a bit better, I will look at the Somlipith deck and see how that looks. As I told @Moon-Hermit above I am studying not her deck but when I do move onto this will will let you know if you like. Thanks again !

Preparing to do a tarot reading (for someone else).
MouthOfTheLion replied to MouthOfTheLion's topic in Tarot Talk & Technique
Yes, I am on the hunt for local people to practice with. Some of the people in my social circle are suspicious of tarot but use oracle cards or are open to receiving readings with oracle cards, I'm not sure if it's worth it to go down that road or not. Oracle cards don't interest me as much as tarot, but I would be getting practice with the physical aspects of sitting down with someone and doing a reading. -
Hello @Donna24 welcome to the TT&M Family

What's your favorite way to get to know your decks?
MouthOfTheLion replied to StarkRavenMad's topic in Tarot Talk & Technique
The questions, of course! I know he doesn't care what the other cat thinks of him.. though he might be interested to know how to get the dog to stop sniffing his butt. 🤔😆
