Bodhiseed Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 Thank you Fire cat! ❤️ This week I'll be using the Norse Tarot, created by Clive Barrett and published by U.S. Games. I'll also be using the Viking Lenormand, created and self-published by my friend Carole Beasley. The draws this morning are the Prince of Discs and the Child: Everything that ends is also the beginning of something else. Pain is not a punishment; pleasure is not a reward. ―Pema Chödrön This Prince stands in front of what's left of a burial mound. Feeling a deep connection to earth and nature, he is aware of the seasons and the cycles of birth and death. He does not expect grains to grow in the dead of winter; neither does he expect them to continue to grow after being harvested. The Prince understands that the force that moves the circle of life is independent and does not take sides. The Child represents fresh starts and innocence. In this case, it points to embracing the truth that both pain and pleasure are inherent in life. To recognize that all beings are subject to these states can keep us from grasping or hatred, which only serve to forge man-made suffering.
Rachelcat Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 Hi crew! This week will be Great Lines from Great Movies Knowledge Cards Vols. I and II. I got these years ago and shuffled them together. They’re copyright Library of Congress and published by Pomegranate. The combined deck has 96 cards in total. It includes movies dated 1931 to 2004. It’s not on my deck list now. I’m going to try it out this week to see if I want to add it as oracle cards or put it away as a trivia game. It has the quote in a box in a larger font, with context and movie details upside down on one side and additional info and trivia about the movie on the other side. Volume I has a blue background; Volume II is silver. Let’s see what it can do! What is your most important characteristic? “Gentlemen. You can’t fight in here. This is the war room!” Dr. Strangelove, 1964 The deck doesn’t shy away from conflict. Or irony. What is your strength? “Rosebud.” Citizen Kane, 1941 The quotes are very recognizable and from the top-ranked movies. The deck is all about nostalgia. Your weakness? “Yeah, one. One’s too many and a hundred’s not enough.” The Lost Weekend, 1945 (Drinks for an alcoholic, that is.) The deck is addictive, but doesn’t have much “nutrition,” actually helpful insights. What can you teach me? “That’s quite a dress you almost have on.” An American in Paris, 1951 That sounds much more like a noir movie than a dance one! The deck can teach me about staying within and mixing genres or categories. How can I learn it? “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” Mary Poppins, 1964 Be open to impressive-sounding nonsense. Enjoy the unexpected. What will be the outcome of our work together? “May the force be with you.” Star Wars, 1977 Although it might not be very deep, it will touch on spiritual issues. And lots of nostalgia for me. (I saw Star Wars 5 times when it came out, the year I graduated from high school.) Fun! I’m looking forward to more quotes!
Petalene Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 I want to go through all my decks and decide which to keep and which to let go of, and this seems like a good way to sort out the ones I’m undecided about. It’s Christmas time, so I’m using the Nightmare Before Christmas deck.
fire cat pickles Posted December 11, 2023 Author Posted December 11, 2023 Welcome back, @Rachelcat! Welcome to the group @Petalene 🙂 Great idea sorting your decks for "pre-(post?) approval". The DoW Group is a fun and enlightening way to share how your decks can work for others, to highlight new or unique reading techniques and spreads, and perhaps to introduce new decks for other members.
MarineMurine Posted December 11, 2023 Posted December 11, 2023 I fell off the Daily Draws wagon for a little while, so I’m going to try Deck of the Week to bring some focus back into my routine. This week I’m going to commit to using the Elemental Tarot, which is a bit of a funny duck - it uses astrological correspondences, represents majors with gods, and has a lot of renamed majors. I’ve had it for years after finding it in a charity shop and falling in love with the art, but I’ve never used it. Let’s see how we’ll get on together. 1. Who are you? Virgin. She stands for the High Priestess as Major #2 and is titled Receptivity. Each of the majors in this deck has its own sort of "catchphrase." The Virgin says, "I am shame and I am boldness; I am shameless and I am ashamed." This card speaks of the release of unconscious emotions, of having strange and strong feelings that can both excite and frighten. The Virgin is sensitive, vulnerable, and inexperienced. There’s a lot in this deck, but it’s not quite sure it’s ready to open up and reveal itself to the world. I think it’s shy, but comfortable with contradictions. 2. Who am I? 7 of Earth, represented by the god Mot, a Phoenician deity of harvest and change. This card is titled Avalanche. 7 of Earth indicates a large-scale enterprise or a risk with property or finance, or alternatively the urge to try something risky and new. It may also indicate a change in one’s world view. As someone who is beginning to navigate the housing market and is experiencing all sorts of upheavals spiritually, this fits very well. 3. How will we work together? Six of Earth, represented by the Finnish goddess Akka, who is in change of Harvest - which is also the title of this card. Harmony is suggested here; sharing the easy company of others. It warns against overindulgence (I shouldn’t read with this deck for every little query that pops into my head!), but promises generosity and plenty. I get a really welcoming vibe from the art on the card.
fire cat pickles Posted December 12, 2023 Author Posted December 12, 2023 Welcome to the group @MarineMurine! The Elemental is one if my favorites. I wish I still had mine!
Petalene Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Nightmare Before Christmas. I adore the movie. I watch it every year and I have three different versions of the soundtrack which I listen to year round, especially the Twinkle Twinkle Little Rockstar album. This is a Minerva Siegel deck through Insight Editions. I have some issues with the pipish nature of many of their decks. I love the creepiness at Christmas vibe to the deck. I don’t love all the cards, especially some of the needle cards. They are very plane in a way even the candle cards aren’t. The illustrated cards lean toward simplicity, which isn’t an issue. I like the uncluttered simplicity. Art by Abigale Larson. I really like her art style. The guide book is decent. RWS based meanings despite some cards having little to nothing to do with the traditional RWS imagery. I like that there are upright and reversed meanings, despite me rarely having to reference a guide book. Deck flip through. I have used this deck before, but not much. The major arcana are outstanding. Very creatively interpreted. The minor arcana is good, but a few of the cards are so meh. The 5 and 7 of needles don’t really give you anything to work with. Same for some of the candle cards. This isn’t a deck where I’d typically want to do a one card pull. There wouldn’t be much to work with on enough of the cards that I don’t think it would be beneficial. I’d use this deck at Christmas time, unlikely to use at Halloween, as I have the Halloween Tarot and that’s my go to October deck. 12/11/23 Book Spread : Behind the Cyclops Eye. I shuffled for reversals. Why am I reluctant to let go of tarot decks I don’t use? 2 3 1 The Eye - What appears to be going on. What’s Hidden - The nature of an important hidden aspect of the situation. Advice - What to keep in mind while handling the situation Card one - eight of presents (coins) Rx. I don’t want to put in the work with some of these decks and I want the potential more than I want to risk being disappointed by what’s inside. The elves are focused on the bag than they on the presents already there. They are moving things around to make more room and I’m tired of don’t that. Card two - eight of needles (swords). I feel stuck. I know I can get out, but it feels like too much work. She’s sewing in the card. I hate sewing. When I crochet and knit, I will go to great, time consuming lengths to avoid it. I can do it and it frequently takes less time than I think it will. But I still don’t want to. Card three - ten of presents (coins). I want all the stuff and to surround myself with a pile of things, which is not the legacy I want to have for myself or my family. The snake has a dragon guarding its treasure vibe going on and that’s not the point of presents. It’s to find joy in the giving and sharing, not the hoarding. I’ve known for a while that I have too much stuff in general and too many decks as a more specific issue. And I want to pare down so I can use and enjoy what I have instead of feeling like I endlessly need to move stuff around to fit more things in. No candles (wands) and no potions (cups), which is interesting given that I’m feeling kind of meh about things lately. No passion and no excitement. And part of that is too much stuff leading to decision fatigue. I know I need to let go, but it’s not always easy. I do like the art on the cards. The ten of presents is gorgeous.
Bodhiseed Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Welcome to to the DoW group @MarineMurine and @Petalene! The artwork on the Elemental Tarot is lovely. That spread with NBC Tarot seemed to give a very clear reading!
Petalene Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 12/12/23 Yes/no/maybe spread - one of my favorites for a quick reading. I shuffled for reversals. Will going through and using all my decks result in my wanting to keep more than is practical for me? Yes if…(page of candles Rx) I’m all over the place and don’t pick one thing to focus my attentions and passion on. No if…(Eight of candles) I make decisions swiftly and get the decks I’m not keeping out of the house. Maybe if…(six of potions) I get nostalgic about why I bought them and the times I’ve used them instead of actually assessing the decks. Shadow card (because I like shadow cards) Seven of presents. This for me is the procrastination and stagnation card. I’m 100% in this situation because I put off dealing with it. Thoughts - This is a helpful reading. This spread tends to offer the slap upside the head I need regardless of the deck I use. But this is much more drawing on the traditional RWS meanings than on the content of the cards. And the six of potions looks so washed out. It could be faded memories, but still.
Guest Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 Will be reading with the Morgan Greer Tarot again this week.
Guest Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 Thanks @fire cat pickles. I have earned some leisure time so Imma hang around the DotW's until Three Kings at least.
Guest Posted December 15, 2023 Posted December 15, 2023 Started posting my daily draws for the week here:
Petalene Posted December 18, 2023 Posted December 18, 2023 Last reading this week. it was kind of intense and personal, so pic only, no interpretation. I enjoyed using this deck. I did a reading each day even though I didn’t post them all. I got helpful readings with interesting insights and I had fun using it. It’s a Christmas deck for me, so I’d only likely be using it in December. I’ll reach for the Halloween Tarot in October before I’d reach for this. And I found it helpful to focus on one deck this week so I don’t feel like I needed to pick a deck. I really liked the spreads in the book. I’m still a little iffy on a few of the cards, but that’s true of most decks. This is going in the keep pile and I want to keep up with using a deck a week.
