When someone enters your home, do they know?

Since my new shelf by my computer, they will know almost as soon as they walk in the house. My tower is a beast--it has a basement (first thing people notice) and my tarot shelf is next to it so you can't miss it.  The other day a friend of ours brought over his new girl to meet us and I was sitting in my reading corner and she walked over to me and saw my cards around me and thought it was so cool.  But when I opened my medicine cabinet filled with tuck box tarot cards she became really excited.  I also have a little sugar skull display with the Santa Muerte deck foremost on the shelf that you can't miss.

That’s is awesome! Yet another unsuspecting victim lured into the amazing world of tarot :bubble_bhehe:

Nope.

The majority of my Tarot stuff is on the 2nd floor. One has to be a good friend to step inside the room (bedroom) that they reside in. Lol.

In my home therapy room - I do have the ShadowScapes Tarot on display in a wrack next to the health leaflets. Clients only notice if they're really looking around. Or when I pull it out and say... "well - shall we ask the cards for a suggestion or alternative view?..."

Lee, your wreath is wonderful. I've observed as time goes on, most people don't much care what someone else does unless in their face.

In the years I was seriously studying, there were tarot and other esoteric books all over the house, every room where I might have a couple minutes to pick one up.

The decks and companion books have always been in the open in the office though, where I use them, and like to have everything in handy reach.

I've had very christian focused cousins, and friends who are Jehovah Witness all sleep in the office, no one has left in the middle of the night, or expressed interest of any kind. Probably because I'm respectful to them of what they believe although I personally think they are unhinged ...

But also we have to feel safe, there are places in the world where it could be problematic in future if someone noticed it in your home.

I live in a little town in Texas(!)

And I have stuff out all the time. It's never caused problems.
People know I read cards, and I'm sure there is a wacky faction that thinks I'm in league with Satan. But most people don't care. My house is directly behind a botanica, and a lot of people around here do readings, limpias, etc.
I am not a Big Deal. 😉

So it's a personal decision if you feel you want to express it. But I do still believe that your home is where you can express your personality and interests! How many people have giant Buddha's in their home and have no interest in studying Buddhism and are not Buddhists

😂 We should express ourselves if we can!

Why would anyone have giant Buddhas and no interest in Buddhism? That's crazy.
I have a bronze Tara and a big porcelain Kuan Yin. And while I don't fully commit to ANY religion (theocracy is a major threat these days!), I do understand what they're about (and am not too proud to call on them in a pinch, lol!)

If I wasn't into them at all, I wouldn't have them taking up the limited space in my home, and I certainly would never have committed to all that dusting!

PS - How do I get the BB codes to function correctly here? The quote/end quote function is all messed up. :(

You have to press return until the frame gets cut off and you can type underneath it. If that makes sense? And, welcome back, by the way! 😉

I *think* I just did it.
Thank you - and thank you!

Most of us worry too much about what others think of us.

One time my mother tried to say something about Tarot and Devil Worship. I just rolled my eyes at her and asked if she knew me. Am I stupid? Am I evil? Am I easily led by fads? Did she really think pictures on little pieces of paper were going to harm my soul? Then I threw her a dollar and asked why we could all but worship those little pictures but the ones I had were evil? She has gone to a don't ask don't tell, but I know she sees the decks in my purse, or laying on the bed. I always have at least one with me.

If you know me, you know I study tarot. When people ask what I do, I tell them. In fact, I often overshare. 😋

I usually have study materials, books, etc out and about on the daily, but my actual decks are usually stored in a shelf in my room. I'll have some decks out on a few occasions, but I don't often leave them laying around.

I have an office in our new home dedicated to study and practice. When we give friends a tour of the house, I put away my crystal ball and my bowl of Lenormand decks (my tarot decks are already in bins), and then I sort of stand near the doorway with my back to the bookshelves. There isn't much else to see and I don't volunteer anything. My family knows what I do, and I sometimes read for them. My wife's family knows too, but they're very religious and don't bring it up when they're here.

I'm kind of curious about why people are worried.
Nobody's come to my house with torches and pitchforks, shot at or assaulted me for reading cards, burned a cross on my lawn, or railroaded me into prison. (Knock wood, but still...none of this is very likely. I'd probably be more likely to get this kind of thing for being a democrat.)

I doubt my tarot and astrology stuff would bother anyone. Some of my grimoires might. I really don't want to have to explain what Israel Regardie's Complete Golden Dawn System of Magic is all about, and it's too large and imposing a volume to miss. And I'd rather keep my crystal ball away from curious gazers. I still have to live in a suburban neighborhood in Middle America (demographically if not geographically, especially now that we've moved) and I don't want to deal with being a social pariah, if not for me than for my wife.

Consideration for your wife is a good thing.
Though explaining Regardie could be just the thing to hurry a boring guest homeward. 🤣

Haha, now there's a thought! If Regardie didn't work, the name "Crowley" certainly would. A couple of passages from the Book of the Law would definitely do the trick. (As long as they don't come back with torches and pitchforks.)

Yes. Or just let this lovely poster do the job. (Framed, of course. You don't want your home looking like a college dorm room.)

ETA: She's got some Tarot Majors posters at the site. I hope she eventually does a complete deck, or at least a full set of Majors - she's quite good!

My home is quite typical, I don't have lots of tarot cards or related books etc so right away, they wouldn't be able to tell.

I truly don't care. I would be annoyed to become a pariah - for my SO's sake, not for mine; I am quite happy playing the hermit - but only one person in my life has started making a protective cross sign in front of herself when she can't avoid me.... One slightly amusing thing was when one of my sisters discovered I was what she called "interested" - and kindly - it was meant kindly - sent me the most basic tarot book I have ever seen in my life. It does have pretty pictures... But she'd be embarrassed to recall it if she ever actually SAW my tarot room, with its hefty tomes; she'd realise what she;'d done.

People might or might not know. There are usually books in the living room - but there are also other books, and it would depend on which was on top. Most days there are a few decks on my desk - but again - papers and the phone and stuff... The Collection is in its own room, and I could close the door with ease, if I liked. Though it is starting to spread; there are now some in a glass fronted cupboard in the bedroom - but most guests don't go up there.

I want lee's wreath too. And the address of Daniel's witches' shop....

Mine are in two cabinets in the bookshelf, originally made for liquor and glasses. One of them has glass doors, so if visitors really looked they’d know they were there. My collection is private, but not a secret.

I have considered getting a few coffee table tarots, for guests! 🙂

I still haven't decided whether to put up my old B.O.T.A. poster. I would have to frame it, though. Thumbtacks won't do. It's not a college dorm room, y'know. 😀

This is a nook next to the living room in my apartment, so people can tell I'm into crystals but not immediately that I'm into tarot. The decks are stored in the card catalog!

In general I don't talk much about my spirituaI practice even to friends unless they ask. And I have that same philosophy regarding my home. I dont have my cards out when I'm expecting company, that just seems like general common sense to me. But I also don't hide the box with my cards or my shelf of tarot books.

Despite that no one has really commented too much about the books. The ornate box draws attention once in a while
