Eric13 Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 If anyone was thinking of making their own deck, I think a great idea for the Devil card would be an apple tree with 10 apples on it and a snake slithering through it and a man and woman standing under it with the woman reaching out and looking up into the tree and the man looking at her. Each are naked of course. They are standing on a black ground. Just a thought. It foes well with the Lovers card.

As long as it’s apparent that the snake, the woman and the apples are innocent and it’s the man that mislead them all 😁
Decan Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 A card like that exists in the Victorian Romantic Tarot 3rd edition, it's the alternative Devil card.
Eric13 Posted January 7, 2020 Author Posted January 7, 2020 @Decan, funny you would say that. I know they had a woman with red wings for the Devil, but I didnt see that particular one. @Raggydoll, well that's all open for interpretation now isn't it!

Decan Posted January 7, 2020 Posted January 7, 2020 (edited) @Eric yes I searched on Google images but just saw the woman with red wings for the Devil, but there is another one in the 3rd edition like you describe things (more or less), but maybe in the 3rd edition only. I don't know... Ah, I found it!! Edited January 7, 2020 by Decan

The apples are really innocent in my opinion though! 😁 Edited January 7, 2020 by Decan

Well, that is SUCH a Christian concept 😞 Sure there are broader and more cultural inclusive images, that portray the concept of EGO The Devil itself being a Christian construct.......

Eric13 Posted January 7, 2020 Author Posted January 7, 2020 Some people believe in this, some people dont some people believe in that, some people dont believe in anything. Some people dont even believe in tarot or oracle cards and call those who do nuts. We're all part of one circle, or some of us believe we're all living on the back of a great turtle created by the great mother. To each his own.

So if it's a Christian deck with that audience in mine, then why not. Although most Christians are terrified of Tarot. I read that in the USA, 30-35% of the population are evangelicals. This kind of boggles the European mind. And I can imagine that a lot of other Christian denominations would have the same trembling and fear in the face of this evildoer.
Eric13 Posted January 7, 2020 Author Posted January 7, 2020 This isn't a thread about religion, but believe it or not, in America enlight of what the media tells you, people of all Faith's love next to each other without giving a hoot about each others faith. That rarely gets talked about.

He's in the OT as well (and probably Islam, too.) But he's a different devil. He hangs out with God and they make bets on how much Job will put up with before he loses faith. Like a couple of guys at a pool hall. And when people go bad, it's generally because they've "hardened their hearts", not because of some outside evil entity. I think Eve and the Serpent is just an allegory of how we came into this world, trying to explain how we "fell into matter" and became meatsacks who feel pain and have to eat. That's not supreme evil. It's just life. (I can't read Hebrew and so can't say that's the Last Word, it's just the impression I get.) Christianity DOES inflate the Devil's role. A LOT. Not so much in the Gospels (where he goes to "tempt" ,i.e., needle Jesus. Again, a couple of guys playing one-upmanship, lol.) but in the churches. The evangelicals have gone crazy with it. Everything that's not part and parcel of THEIR church is "satanic". Just seeing certain movies or listening to "secular music" is enough to throw the door open for Satan to come take over your life. They're always on about the devil trying to seduce them over to his side. (It's my opinion that, if there is a God and a Devil, neither one wants them. 🙄) It's more about the devil than it is about Jesus. And certainly more Satanic than the Satanic Temple, which is nontheistic and basically a bunch of activists trying to preserve the separation of church and state. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Satanic_Temple Just my two cents, YMMV, etc.

The snake representing choices or a third party.

Marigold Posted January 8, 2020 Posted January 8, 2020 (edited) When I was fooling around seriously once with the Tarot, I made a Devil "card" like this : Edited to add : I renamed the card. I called it "Security". I was studying in depth the reversed meanings of all the TdM cards. All 78 of them got new names and pictures. They can all be seen in my personal blog on Cult of Tarot, but I would suspect that one has to be a member to see them. I would imagine that Joan Marie has made those personal blogs more private. I'm attaching just for fun the reversed Fool card that I made. It's called Utopia and not Dystopia. Because a utopia is just an inversed dystopia. Both are hopeless situations. Eric13 Posted January 8, 2020 Author Posted January 8, 2020 @2curious Well thank you! And wouldn't the Devil wreak as a symbol of ego? I think so. So if the Devil foretells of ego, all the better to inform someone to watch their ego. Cast out the ego as you may the Devil. There can bee no good without the bad. There can e no God without the Devil. Metaphorically.

Yes, thats the one. The devil is you, me, everyone. And (s)he is staring you in the face. Some people interpret this card as a seductive person. I think that is the very superficial side of things.
Eric13 Posted January 8, 2020 Author Posted January 8, 2020 Exactly. In what I initially describes, the Tree has ten apples representing the Tree of Life. The snake is there, as the Devil, representing temptation, or in simpler words, "wanting". The woman wants the apple from the Tree of Life, the man "wants" the woman. Wanting, getting acquiring. All false bondages. Want nothing and you will have everything.
