Next week I will trace her onto watercolour paper and will begin to paint. (I won't have time at the weekend!) It seems appropriate to use watercolours for her to keep that nice underwater effect. When the paint is dry I will then ink in the details. I LOVE this!! I cannot wait to see it when its done!

My card is the Explorer of Air (equivalent to the Knight of Swords). I am using traditional techniques - graphite and charcoal. And I am obviously not anywhere near done. But that IS the point of this thread after all, so... here goes!! She's very beautiful and powerful!

I have redrawn her with a different head/face, I think she is prettier, the rest of the drawing remai ns the same and I am getting ready to transfer her to the paper I will be coloring. I think I am going to go with colored pencils instead of watercolor pencils as I have way more color choices which I think I will need. Anyways, here is the revised version of the card: Love her! She seems a little more innocent now with those doe eyes and smaller smile. A bit on the shy side, yet with budding confidence, which I think works out really well for her as she's the Novice, right? I'm glad you kept the original so you could modify! Me, I tend to have temper tantrums when I dislike my original sketches and rip to shreds and sometimes burn them, haha. But I have thousand of sketches, so I can't keep them all. 🙂 Can't wait to see her colored.

It may be because I tend to have a heavy hand and my layers of color are often thick, but I thought it seemed to lift color or push it around more than blend it, and the results were more mottled than blended. And I had to apply more color afterwards. I've found that blending in a circular motion with the lighter color of whatever area I'm blending works better. Colored pencils are very forgiving if you use light to medium pressure in order not to flatten the tooth of the paper that holds the color. You can just add more layers and rework again and again. I keep reminding myself to ease up on the pressure I use and just go lightly. It blends easier that way. @Jewel, in a way, I wish I went with a plain sky and grass background - it would be so much easier than the stone wall I decided to put behind my Hermit! Lol. Stones aren't hard to draw, but every time I look at it I want to add more shading... just a little here, oh and there, oh needs more shadow, oh that stone should have a bit of pink, this one needs yellow and on and on and on.... This is really great advice! Now, have you posted a WIP of your Hermit? Did I miss it? There was a lot of catching up I've been trying to do...

The only reason I still have the original is because she is in my sketchbook, honestly had she been on a loose sheet she would have ended up in the trash along with the partially colored version 😆. I also think the new face captures more of that budding confidence I associate with the card so I am so glad you captured that from the drawing. I actually did the head/face then retraced the body and rest of the card. I did it all on tracing paper then transferred it to the paper I am coloring with graphite paper. What I posted was the actual drawing on the tracing paper. Obviously I did not include any shading details as I was tracing her over. I need to go me some pink and lavender pastels to finish up my sky background, but as I do not have those yet I will just proceed with starting to color her and add those when I get them. I had never worked with pastels before (had my mini-set for years) so I am glad I pulled them out to give the sky a shot as they work really well for that as they blend so easy with a cotton ball.

I only posted a tiny section of my WIP, just of my Hermit's hand - I was having problems with it and asked for ideas on how to fix it. I'm not sure I will post more of it as I continue making progress, but I might! If I do, I'll have to get out my camera because my phone takes really crappy pictures. I'm pretty happy with my Hermit so far - not 100% happy, but happy enough! About half of the picture is colored in and I may have to significantly change the rest, just to fit it all in. I'm working at almost 3x scale and need to make sure objects are large enough so details within the frame aren't lost when shrunk down to size.
Esk Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 I just want to congratulate everyone for your great artworks 😍. If I had more skills and time I would have like to join but I can't. I will just follow the progress of this beautiful project and admire all your works!!
Raggydoll Posted January 24, 2020 Author Posted January 24, 2020 I am almost done but I decided that I am going to let the art continue all the way down so I’ll be adding more of her body and more of the background.

Day Soleil Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 Here is my Novice of Fire - posting in the hopes that he won't be the only photo collage piece! I assembled this in Photoshop. The man is from a photo I'd taken of the underpainting of an oil portrait I did many years ago. I'd painted him on a canvas gessoed with ripped out pages from a psychology book, so that's why there's some texture in the background. In Photoshop, I threw in some layers containing a colored pencil piece of a crazy fish and a chameleon. The torch is from a license-free photo from Pixabay. I tweaked all the colors, saturations, contrasts, etc. I wanted him to be fiery and imaginative and maybe a little unable to control all those elements, since he's a Novice. 🙂 If anyone has a vision for a particular card but doesn't want to draw or paint something, maybe you could consider a photo collage! You could find the photos on a free source like Pixabay.com and come up with the layout. I'd be happy to assemble them in Photoshop to the best of my ability. Just want to put that offer out there.

It cost me pretty much what you'd have to pay Kinko's or somewhere to scan decently for you. AFAIK - about $20. Just saying. Sweet! In my neck of the woods I would probably have to pay a frigging US 300 for a scanner and it would probably last 6 months 😉 Dealing with humidity is not easy 😉

Each of you brings such a unique perspective to your chosen cards and it's a beautiful thing, to say the least. I cannot wait to have a copy of the finished deck in hand, I am so excited! So, I'm going to try my hand at drawing the Tower card. If it doesn't work out I'll do photo collage. 😉 *fingers crossed that the drawing works out* this is exciting looking forward to your Tower and keep my fingers crossed it works out the way you want ! ❤️
