Happy New Year Everyone!!! 🐯

Thank you for the thread @VGimlet 🎉

I’m in with the Thomson-Leng Tarot Cards this week.

This deck came to me via eBay several weeks ago. The listing was up for a long time, but I couldn’t make up my mind about it. I was afraid I would be reluctant to handle it, and it would wind up living in a box on a shelf. Fortunately, these cards turned out to be well-used, and they do love handling.

So far, so good.

@Disa, I never thought I'd love a b&w deck as much as I do the Abyss. That Empress sums up so much of what I love about her art - instead of sitting and pregnant, she is moving and creating. Nothing stagnant here!

@Rachelcat, That Ten of Swords (Everything is fine) just cracks me up. Takes a lot for some of us to let go of our beliefs and opinions, lol.

@Madame Squee, it's good to see you back! That Thomson-Leng is lovely, and I'm glad you're using it.

@vulprix, I too had a problem with the Paulina. I loved the art but it was not a very readable deck for me so I gave it away.

This week Ill be using the Forest of Enchantment Tarot, created by Meraylah Allwood (artist) and Lunaea Weatherstone (author) and published by Llewellyn. I'll also be using the Mystic Mushrooms, a book and deck set created and self-published by Blake Condolora. Today's draws are the Six of Challenges (Swords) and Pinwheel Mushroom:

AVvXsEjtwnVC7hSE3hC5jCCkWGq126j3If3k-_ExqtFJ_BEg0C_8RR04r40PC0Bu114sGYpyLh8eOIQ-KfiRHohUsXZ-wCRZy4iLQxmSR9DamAI547o_fm61WVyGCf6iPNSiq4L2t2XC_r2TTal-huRrzCoWfZylSB6wE_VyitCX5_sR2L3VmHMH-zH_vX8V=s320AVvXsEiUtru6Me67JHZ8FEgpeAqNneFcXYAcNZZ1SMmGANL0LefxlOb3i3qMEMQfqxIs6X1enG_Z7IW4SJtSRjtd0jnNFzol92a_aFUb7y7RimwtanmByOxL0WjiPQEznAlfS0TQyH_aVR9omFE-7-1Q1hAp7LYj3F7smGlZvjJFE4Z8zyN4y8uCW_-u-lwS=s320

Having been chased by a wild dog (I too climbed a tree) and nearly run down by an Angus bull as a kid, I can relate to this poor dwarf's close call with the wolves. But what does it look like when the voices in our head are the wolves chasing us? Humans are information seekers with a strong need to know in order to find meaning. On the plus side, we're more likely to accept change when we know the why of things; even if the change fails to benefit us personally, our sense of fairness is satisfied. But the dark side of our need to know can overwhelm us with information that only causes us stress or makes us feel lonely and unworthy. Pinwheel mushrooms have widely spaced gills, which do sort of resemble a pinwheel, but their caps and wiry stems make them look like tiny umbrellas. As umbrellas are designed to protect mostly our heads in the rain, this mushroom implies that we would be wise to protect ourselves from information overload. Legal scholar Cass Sunstein advocates that information is helpful when it makes people happier, aids their well-being, or helps them make decisions. For all the rest, pop open your umbrella.

Mark me down for the "Vintage RWS" please.  I finally had a chance to do a quick spread, and I decided I'll use that this week.  It's new to me, and surprisingly it's my very first real RWS deck.  I always hated the art, especially since the color yellow irks me, and the RWS always had SO much yellow.  The "vintage" version is quite sparing with the yellow though, so I'm happy with it!

And yes I'm aware that my icon has a bit of yellow... I wanted a Bohemian Cat for my icon and the Fool dressed in yellow just seemed to show up well in the cropped miniature form. 👀

Well I did my first spread with the Tarot of the Abyss. This is a spread I found posted on instagram yesterday. I wasn't sure if we are to post full readings in this space or not, so I've just included a picture of the cards I drew for the spread, the spread positions, and the cards drawn. I placed the cards from left to right in 3 rows because my table is tiny.

I thought I had shuffled the new deck extensively yesterday and again today before drawing the cards, but once I drew them I wondered if I'd shuffled them enough.  There are a lot of swords and pentacles in a row, but the cards seem to match the positions for me perfectly.

Of course the first card drawn is the only one I looked at when I first got this deck and didn't love it because the image of the person's face is not actually on their head!  The blank face gave me a start!

So, here are the spread positions and the card I drew for each:

1. Something positive: 2 of Swords

2. Something negative: Ace of Swords

3. Goal to strive for: The World

4. The lesson: The Awakening(Judgement)

5. Area of Self Growth: 5 of Swords

6. Where I am now: 4 of swords

7. Relationships: 4 of Pentacles

8. Career: 3 of Pentacles

9. Health: 2 of Pentacles

10. Spirituality: Ace of Pentacles

11. Overall Energy: The Empress

So far I am loving this deck!!!  When I laid the cards all out in the spread I just found them beautiful.  I haven't even written out the interpretations, but I like the messages.

OK this deck is gorgeous Disa! Thank you immensely for introducing me to it.

I look forward to your thoughts on the spread. An interesting one, I'm curious to see what jumps out at you.

And...any member that quotes Ronnie James Dio is already a friend in my eyes. Cheers and keep the posts flowing!

Inquiry:  Should I continue this difficult and complex friendship?

Center Card Position -- the Reflection of the current situation:

   Three of Wands

Keywords: Cognitive Problems / Mental Difficulty

Left Card Position:  the risks of this friend relationship / what I stand to lose

Six of Wands

Keyword: Recognition

Right card position:  The benefit / The rewards of staying in the friendship

Atu 0: THe Fool

Keywords: Beginnings

OK, there's a lot to unpack here. Within the context of the deck itself, the images are quite striking, yet I find the keywords a distraction rather than a touchstone.

The center card hits home, as I think we both she and myself bring a lot of conflicted feelings and a past history of mental strife to the table, being former lovers.  The Rider-Waite has  a strong theme of forgiveness with this card, and I think there is a fair amount of that lacking for each of us.  Overall, this reflection in the center indicates the severe complexity of the conundrum, but offers hope and potential growth if I (we) choose it.

The card on the left has to to with my need to be recognized. With out getting overly personal, I feel this wands card reflects some of my issues and the "price" of the friendship to me should I continue.

And then we have the Fool, marked as Beginnings.  Within the context of the position (Rewards of staying in the relationship) it seems that a fresh start is possible. I personally do not see it happening without some communication first, how much of which I do not know is possible.   Thus, this fool could equally equate to a waste of time or even regret for diving back into what seems to not be working.

I find this deck to be quite vibrant to engage with, although I am uncertain as the art feels a bit unsettling. Again, the keywords were a mistake (especially since I do not read reversals).

Looking forward to your thoughts on this brief spread.

Thankyou so much @VGimlet. I appreciate the low - key, flexible approach. With that said, do we post our readings and observations in this thread, or  a separate one?  Thanks.

We use this thread, usually, but you don't HAVE to, LOL.

Welcome @Belinda22, and nice to see you back @Madame Squee!

I think I'm caught up now, and it's so great to see all the new people participating.    I rarely post my reading here since I keep a journal of my daily draws, I haven't been doing consistent daily draws with so much going on recently, but I'm firmly committed to being better about that this year.    Sometimes I make comments about the deck I'm using, if it was good or "meh" or not so hot.

I love the variety people are using this week.

I thought that was an unusual meaning for the Three of Wands, but after seeing the card it makes perfect sense! It does give a feeling of trying to force something into being rather than just seeing what happens without expectations.

Indeed. That is one positive aspect of the keywords I am experiencing thus far -- they match the appearance, detail and energy of the cards for the most part.

Many others are simply migrated over from her Deck of the Bastard, but those are the safer more staple and standard definitions.

I have a 1927 Torocco Piemontese gifted to me by Deborah from AT when we met up. It is ultra used, and the cards are literally two-parted, front and back. Each time it's turn comes around in my deck of the week rotation there are a few that need reglued. I decided early on the deck was precious to me, but not to be precious about it. I use it and love it. Your Thompson Leng is stunning.

Lovely to see everyone here!

I'm really enjoying the Surrealist Tarot, it's not as crazy as the other Surrealistic deck I have (somewhere) and the images are better for tarot, IMO.

Hi Folks!

What a lively group we have this week! ♥

In terms of the Paulina Tarot, I have to ad, that I worked with that one for a looooong time.

It, as well as the Shadowskapes Tarot taught me to get comfortable with a wide variety of strange Otherworld Beings.

In my shamanic practice I was too fixated on Animal and Ancestor Beings - like in my culture and family tradition, BUT:

Quite a few of my shamanic students and also patients do see Beings like this in trance journeys, dreams and one even in a 2 months long induced coma.

Now, I LOVE the Paulina for opening me up to all kinds of quirky Beings and bringing them into my senses and understanding ♥

Greetings all,

I'm taking  a good walk-through of the Sola Busca Revisited this evening.  I've come to the conclusion that accuracy or history aside, I simply don't like the artwork.

For your perusal, I will post the card I think is most effectively illustrated , as well as a few that just assured me that was going up for sale soon.

On the impressive side, I have an affinity for this Devil, I find it expressive and unique:

as for the other two cards in the 2nd picture, it is a prime example of why I should of researched the Sola Busca concept more before clicking that purchase button.  The artist did a fine job revisiting the Sola, I'm just not keen on it in general I feel.  The figure on the right does nothing for me, and the swords on the left look like LARP boffers.  I'm sure it will find a good home soon enough.

Thanks for letting me unravel this a bit. And, the reading  I posted  proved helpful .

@Bodhiseed I am intrigued by your mushroom deck, but my eyes gave out with the dark lettering in your post.

I'd love to see some more close up shots of your favorite cards, however.  And yes, some of the unusual keywords in that Sola Busca really were quite fitting.

Above is a link to a video of the mushroom cards (a quick shuffle through all of them). I really like this deck, but I wish he had made the book into a lwb instead. He has the botany info on each, but then he tries to make myths fit the mushrooms, which doesn't make any sense at all. I'd prefer just the natural facts, uses and an explanation of the scientific name (which often tells a lot about it). Of course I have google, so I can find these things out myself. 😄

@Wyrdkiss, sorry about the dark font (I didn't realize it was different other than larger). I usually just copy and paste from my blog, which is probably why.

These cards boast some beautiful photography. I love the aesthetics of mushrooms 🍄☺️ Are you a mycology enthusiast, Bodhiseed? Do you forage, etc.?

@Mi-Shell, it made me very happy to read about your bond with the Paulina. Though it has always proven a bit enigmatic for me, I can’t shake the connection I have with the artwork myself 🙂

I'm definitely a mycology enthusiast, @vulprix.🍄 I don't eat them though, just appreciate them.  Some of the more interesting ones I've come across are the stinky squid (a stinkhorn that releases a fetid slime that attracts insects to help spread the spores) and an earthstar mushroom.

Wow, so much interesting info here, not just on cards either!  I approve! 👍

A quick check-in with the Modern Witch:  I usually dislike all discussion of card stock (Tarot Tubers, I'm looking at you!), but I have to say the Modern Witch cards are very thick, which is nice, BUT they make the deck very thick, too, which interferes with my overhand shuffling.  I guess I should just shuffle holding the short edge, as I do with larger cards.

That is all!  Carry on with deck and mushroom discussion!

@Rachelcat, I'm not real fussy about cardstock either, but I do like enough bend to shuffle but not so much that I'm afraid of damaging the cards. I do a lot of side shuffling because I've got small hands.

ETA: I enjoyed looking through your readings! That looks like an easy to read deck. 😊

I don't think I've seen your 1927 Torroco Piemontese. I'll be watching for it when it comes around again!!

The Thomson-Leng is definitely precious to me, but thankfully its condition has overcome my usual worry over possibly messing it up. We can be friends.

PS: I've even have a plan for repairing detached dogeared corners.

Thank you very much for posting your reading and this review on the Sola Busca Revisited. I agree about the art -- unsettling and even unappealing. However, the deck consistently gives me eerily accurate readings. So, I keep it. As one of my ex-husbands used to say: it eats nothing. (Lol.)

LOL, that is cute.  In my experience the readings have been accurate as well.  Perhaps I'll keep it around, so long as it does not begin demanding snacks.

This was a good week of exploration and sharing. Thanks everyone. Catch you next time hopefully.

I'm trying to imagine what kind of a snack Sola Busca Revisited would require. Devils food cake maybe?
