Rachelcat Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 Hi everyone! Another week already! This week for me will be Superfine Harry the VIII Cards made by I. Kirk, London. (That’s what’s on the side of the wrapper, the front says “King Henry the VIII.” Harry and Henry are interchangeable, I guess!) I got it at Colonial Williamsburg before the pandemic. The wrapper says “This reproduction of eighteenth-century playing cards was especially produced for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.” I recently added my historical repro playing card decks to my “official” deck collection list, including this one. Each card has a short fable story, sometimes rhyming, sometimes not, with a title, a moral, and illustration, and French-suited cards in the upper left. (Similar to Gypsy Witch Cards, so I think I’m going to recategorize it as an oracle rather than playing cards.) I’m not sure how stories will work in spreads, but let’s try it with the interview! Wow, lots of lions here! And mice! What is your most important characteristic? Wolf and Goat The young goat doesn’t leave its tried and true friends behind for a new unknown one, the wolf. The deck is a new friend, so I should approach it with caution. What is your strength? Lion in Love The lion gave up his teeth and claws for love, but then the lady killed him. Love “disarms both our prudence and our strength.” The deck is good for love readings, but they won’t always have a happy ending. What is your weakness? Lion and Four Bulls The lion divides and conquers the bulls. The stories taken separately are trite and obvious. What can you teach me? Lion and Mouse The mouse demanded a lioness for a wife, but she inadvertently squashed him. “Ill-judged ambition oft itself destroys.” The deck can teach about ambition and staying humble! How can I learn it? Sick Lion Lion pretends to be sick and calls the animals to him to say goodbye, but he eats them. Only the fox doesn’t fall for it. He observes what happens to the others and avoids it. I can learn about ambition and humility by observing others’ struggle with them. What will be the outcome of our work together? Cat and Mice Mice decide to bell the cat, but “who shall put it on?” It’s easy to give advice but sometimes difficult to put it into effect. The deck will give me some good advice and insight, but I might not be inclined to follow it! Well, this seemed to work so far. And it's kind of fun to work with the stories!
Mi-Shell Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 Wow! @Rachelcat! ♥ That is a VERY interesting deck! ..... and I am collecting Animal themed decks.......😋
Bodhiseed Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 I'm in with the Tarot of the Abyss paired with the Nature Mandala Cards. Thank you @fire cat pickles!
fire cat pickles Posted May 30, 2023 Author Posted May 30, 2023 Welcome back @Mi-Shell, @Rachelcat and @Bodhiseed 😀 This will be our last "short" week! This coming Monday we head off June and subsequent months with our new start days in full weeks again!
Bodhiseed Posted May 31, 2023 Posted May 31, 2023 This week I'll be using the Tarot of the Abyss, created by Ana Tourian and published by U.S. Games. I've paired with it the Nature Mandala Meditation Cards, created and self-published by Michelle Wallace. Today's draws are the Three of Swords and Remember: Ignorance is bliss. Wisdom is blisters. ― Brian Spellman Tourian's Three of Swords doesn't represent the heartache of betrayal, but the what happens when ignorance is replaced by insight. What was originally denied or avoided has now become an unveiled truth, one that can't be resealed in the bottle. Though we lost our beautiful illusions, now we can at least respond intelligently to reality as needed. This is what the Remember card suggests; insights must extend further than knowledge - they must also be applied. As Carlos Wallace explained, "shutting out your problems does not dismiss them. Ignorance is not bliss. On the contrary, it creates an opportunity for those problems to grow."
Madame Squee Posted June 1, 2023 Posted June 1, 2023 Thank you for the thread @fire cat pickles Belatedly, I'm in with the Russisches Orakel. I ordered Russisches Orakel from Book Depository 14 years ago. It's a divinatory system that uses image-matching, like the Russian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards. (I suspect there is a specific name for this type of system -- if you know what it is, please tell me.) There are 20 small square cards in the deck, each measuring a little over 2 x 2 in. or 50.8 x 50.8 mm. Each card contains half of four symbols. There are 40 symbols in total. The substantial companion book (200 pages) is written in German, which kind of worried me at the time. However, captivated by the artwork and variety of symbols, I figured I would find the time to translate it. That turns out to be now. 😊
fire cat pickles Posted June 1, 2023 Author Posted June 1, 2023 Welcome back @Madame Squee 😀 Those cards look interesting! According to @Misterei they are called "pasyans cards."

I am so happy to know!!! PASYANS CARDS!!! I searched online and found a post here that includes a photo of a pasyan deck I've never seen before. I noticed right away that it contains the same symbols as the Russisches Orakel I'm using. When I saw that, I checked my deck of Russian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards just to make sure they weren't the same, too. (I don't take it for granted anymore that I correctly remember anything.) Was so relieved to discover that Russisches Orakel and Russian Gypsy FTC do share a few symbols but most are quite different -- just as I remembered. 😁 Thank again💐💐💐 Edited June 2, 2023 by Madame Squee typo

And good to know the terminology! I really enjoyed the Russian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards and Lenormand Solitaire when I used them. I didn't know there were so many others! Totally cool! Here are my last readings with King Harry fables cards. I'm surprised how well they worked! Just an encouragement to hunt up more historical playing cards whenever and where ever I go on vacation! See you in next week's thread!

The one I took a picture of is known as the Kiev Soothsayer, there's a few variations of it online. It seems to be a popular one that people make themselves. If you'd like to know more about the history of pasyans the following links are the best I've come across. They're in Russian though, so require Google translate if you don't speak it 😊 Part 1 & Part 2
Madame Squee Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 (edited) My reading with the Russisches Orakel is based loosely on an episode of Judy Justice I somewhat listened to while preparing dinner. My idea: what if the plaintiff approached a tarot reader prior to things getting bad enough for Judge Judy's intervention? Could this whole ordeal been avoided? Let's see... Here's fictitious sitter's question: "Where is my relationship with this man heading?" She also provides the the following backstory: I dated this man in college , nothing serious. We went our separate ways after graduation. I didn't hear from him or know anything about his life until he contacted me over FB two months ago, in January. He asked me if we could get together, and I agreed. He's recently divorced, and I've been divorced for years. It seems like we have a lot in common. We laughed a lot. Since we live three hours apart, we agreed to meet for dinner and dancing about half way in between our homes. We had a great time! Since then, we've continued to meet at the same place several more times. I felt like we were on the verge of becoming romantically involved when he called me at the beginning of March and asked to borrow $1,000 for rent as he had changed jobs and was short. He said would repay me in a month, which would have been the first week in April. Then, a week later he called to ask if he could borrow an additional $2,000 to get his car fixed. He said he would repay the total amount borrowed -- $3,000, on April 2 or 3. However, he called me on March 31 to ask to defer payment until May 1st. I said okay, but I started to think he's not serious about pursuing a romantic relationship with me or even a friendship as he has cancelled our dinner meetings for the past couple of weeks, and it's past May 1. The Reading: I read the cards from top to bottom. Top of the layout is the future, subsequent rows are the present and past. Matching symbols in Row 1: Moon in the Window: "Symbolizes a decision that will be made in the four weeks. Moon represents feelings and recognition. It determines our lives and helps us make the right decision." What does your intuition tell you? Don't be fooled by your desires. You know the truth if you will face it. Wheel: "Many changes occur in your life. You are in a period of upheaval of a positive nature that is fateful." The wheel reminds me of this long distance relationship -- specifically, the driving back and forth. I can't exactly see anything positive coming from the current situation unless my sitter receives $3,000 from this man soon. (I like that the Wheel in this deck is related to the Wheel of Fortune.) Matching symbols in Row 2: Boar: "Symbolizes unexpected and unpleasant events. These events can be dangerous. Take care of yourself, prepare for a crisis and be vigilant." Has there been any indication that you might have some kind of difficulty with this man? Has he shown a temper or any behaviors you find troublesome? Teapot: "Signals possible danger. Many a map picture is spoiled by Teapot. One can quickly run to ruin. That's why you should secure yourself before you start anything or sign contracts. The teapot almost always portends loss and failure. You should think twice about your plans before you put them into action. Conscientious thought and deliberation are necessary in this situation. The image also suggests a delay. There may be something mysterious about it, but you'll find out. If you wait calmly and take action later, you have very good prospects." This would have been good advice for the sitter prior to her loaning money to this man. The Teapot clearly signals the delayed payback. And I'm getting the mysterious part of this relationship. My sense from the beginning is that this man is either not divorced or has a girlfriend at home. And I'm not entirely sure he lives three hours away. I also wonder if the presence of the Teapot signals the eventual lawsuit. Matching symbols in Row 3: Cat, Male: "He stands for flirt and flirtation, a love story or a love relationship." This man is certainly charming, and he presented a romantic attitude initially that was designed to flatter and engage the sitter. However, I know a male cat does get around and always comes back to the place where he is being fed. That's the last symbol in this layout. But, in order to clarify where this relationship is heading, I pulled a card from my bag of Lenormand poker chips... The Clover: brief but lucky. ***** I enjoyed reading with the Russisches Orakel, even though all the typing involved in the translation of 40 symbols and key phrases just about did me in. However, there is so much more information available in the book that apparently addresses layouts and how to read the rows, I've been feeling the need to tackle it. Fortunately, I just discovered a free google app that translates photos of text. Yay!!! (I also think it would have made more sense for me to start reading at the bottom and work up to row 1 since I had decided that row 1 was the future.) PS: Some of the images are a little tricky. Looking at the upper right corner, I thought I saw the Ring just above the Wheel, which would have made a lot of sense to me. However, that image is only one-half of the ring. The other half is the Necklace. The other half of the Ring appears on the last card in the 3rd row. And strangely enough, the other half of the Necklace appears on the last card in the 4th row. Plus, they were matched until I turned the card in the 3rd row to match the Cat, Male. Seeing the 2nd "Ring" is how I realized my mistake in the first row. Lol. (It might as well be rocket science.) I only speak English, but I'm downloading a super translator that works from a photo of text. My goodness, Part 1 contains unbelievably gorgeous historical cards!😍 (Wouldn't it be nice to be able to order a reproduction of one of those decks?) I actually own another pasyans deck, called Radar Fortune Cards. It is similar to the more modern versions pictured in your Part 2 link. It's vintage, from 1943, printed in the United States. There are 36 cards, 2.75 in. square (69.85 mm). I've had this Radar deck for about 20 years but never used it for fear of messing it up. Originally, I wanted to scan the cards and make a deck I could use without worry. However, I didn't have a scanner at the time and so started by photographing the backs of the cards, where the instructions are (an unwieldy system to say the least). Now, I'm thinking I might resurrect this project -- especially since I have a scanner these days. It would not be my own deck exactly, but I would love reading with it. And then I can think more about creating my own. Thank you again for all your help, akiva! This has been great fun!

I use it all the time, as some of the best cartomancy resources aren't in English unfortunately. 13 hours ago, Madame Squee said: I've had this Radar deck for about 20 years but never used it for fear of messing it up. Having two cats that love to chew things makes me weary to get out any of my older/rarer decks. 😂 I do have a version of the Kiev Soothsayer I found online that I printed off and stuck to card. It's rough round the edges but does the job! Also, the hadar is available on Etsy (absolutely love the art work on yours though), it's under the name oracle of seni 😊 (might save you a scanning job!)

Thank you for the Chrome tip! I didn't know! I have it on my computer but can't have it on my phone. I decided to go ahead and photocopy the Radar cards to white card stock, instead of scanning. I didn't play with the color settings, and the cards turned out looking a bit duller, more distressed than the originals, but I like that effect. However, this card stock (the heaviest I can send through this printer) is too thin and keeping the edges in line when turning cards requires more fussing around than I want to do. So, I will be gluing them to a very heavy cover stock to give them more weight. (I glued a deck of Russian Gypsy FTC to this same cover stock, and I love them now. I've used them outside in a pretty good breeze, and they don't move. ) Thank you again, akiva, for all the great information and tips!!! Pasyans cards rule! 👑
