This looks like someone did a cheap imitation of Erté, but swapped out the Borzoi with their dollar store version of the Cartier Panthére. And is that a penis I spy, in roughly the same place a dog would have one? Felines aren't put together like that.

Decan Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Boo, these big black borders with this orange (which is raw and eats the card somehow)… But there is the panther kept on a leash by a rich lady, which is cruelty toward a wild animal. If in addition the card stock is too thin, yes unacceptable!!
katrinka Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Decan is very politely and studiously ignoring the anatomical issue. A true gentleman! 😁
bastetly Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 (edited) I just discovered an oddity about this deck production. The box cover and the 2 of Cups is actually a painting by Howard Pyle called The Mermaid. Somebody let this get past them at LoS! And here are the REAL borders, which I like btw. Where did that nasty orange image come from ? Is that a particularly awful bootleg ? (Penis or not; that actually looks a lot like some of the fluffy saggy bits our cats sometimes got on their bellies....)

Ah, the primordial pouch. https://thisbugslife.com/2020/02/19/the-primordial-pouch-in-cats/ But those tend not to be penis shaped. I don't like to think someone like Dulac was stupid, but I do think he was messing with people.

I got that other one off of some Images on the interweb but posted the right ones above. Sooo gregory, you HAVE the deck. Do you like/love it? or something else? Wondering if the pictures themselves are too small w those large above and below borders, kind of like what happed w Llewellyn's Welsh deck (name escapes me atm). I'm not de-enabled yet.... though I may still get a book w larger illustrations Edited June 16, 2021 by bastetly

Not so worried about it, just thought it was related to growing obesity but maybe not... Love alll your links @katrinka, very informative.
katrinka Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 Thanks, Bastet, and I love your avatar. Kitty is perturbed - watch out! 🤣 But I can't find a link explaining that image, and that's the link I want. Dulac was good - he obviously studied both human and animal anatomy, he certainly got everything else about that panther right. I can't find mistakes in any of his other illustrations. So he was observant and certainly would have noticed that felines don't have penises on their bellies the way dogs do. And it IS a penis. A primordial pouch is wide at the rear legs and narrows as it goes forward. This does the opposite. He did that for a reason, and I'd like to know what that reason was. Who was the woman? What was the illustration done for? Was he mad at someone? There's a story here. I still don't want the deck. How do you interpret a Strength card featuring a panther with misplaced sex parts? But I wouldn't mind a few books. 🙂

I'll try and find an image for you - it does NOT look penis shaped to me - and lord knows I have as filthy a mind as anyone ! 3 hours ago, bastetly said: Yes those are the correct borders. I'm not talking primordial pouches here, just they way they develop that whacking tuft of fur. 2 hours ago, katrinka said: I still don't want the deck. katrinka Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 (edited) Agree to disagree - though I'd like to see a photo of that "whacking tuft of fur", if you say some cats have it, I believe you. Non-purebred domestic cats vary a lot by region: lots of double paws in Massachusetts, pronounced primordial pouches in Texas. And European cats tend to look fluffier on the whole. So your cats may well have that. But I've certainly never seen one on a panther. And surely if Dulac intended it as a tuft of fur, he'd have realized that the image looks identical to a dog penis and revised it - if it wasn't intended to be a dog penis. Artists can have a somewhat barbed sense of humor. I'm sure someone was the butt of this joke. But as they say, you do you, boo. If you read with the deck, you almost HAVE to call it a tuft of fur. It's still unmistakably a dog scabbard by my lights. 😁 Edited June 16, 2021 by katrinka
bastetly Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 (edited) Dog scabbard aside (and I'm sure that's what it was meant to be, Panthers don't carry kittie skin pouches), I have emailed LoS about their mistake w publishing H. Pyle's painting on the tuck box and 2oC, thinking it was Dulac's. 😬 Also I let them know that art needs more room and to please lessen the border on the next edition (as if...), when they correct their stupid mistake LOL. I didn't say "stupid" to them, but it really was. Should have complained about the image used for the Strength card....I think I shall do that now while am at it. I may be de-enabled for this edition actually. If they do another w better corrections, I will probably be a customer. @AJ-ish/Sharyn I had to look up the Princess and the Pea card: it's th 4 of Coins. I can see that. Now I thought the borders were pretty, but they crowd the art and that isn't right, but I don't think every deck needs to be borderless, just less border on this one. I do love his illustrations so getting a gorgeous book or 2 sounds like a great idea, while I wait to see if they're planning on an improved edition. Like you said, it's a mass market. Not all of Llewllyn decks are LoS though. But LoS does make sturdy cardstock, so glad that won't be the problem. Some folks think that thin cards are bad I guess, but it's HOW they're made that counts, right? So my issues are w the images themselves now. Thanks for your thoughts. @Decan I'm writing them about that Strength "animal cruelty" image 👺 (THAT border was the wrong one btw, my bad), and the anatomical blunder 🥳 @katrinka I don't normally wish to buy decks fm Amazon any longer bc of what they are, but now all the more reason since they don't know what they're actually selling !?! Good catch. My avatar face is when I get de-enabled. I am def NOT aging like a fine wine 🤣 @gregory Thank you for your input as well. It helps to hear fm one who owns the deck, and somehow I thought you ]ust might! 😲 haha It looks like it would be a good storytelling deck, but I don't like to strain to see details. I probably need a book to get all of those. And WHAT do YOU dislike in particular about the Strength card? i wanna know! Do you think emailing LoS about the already mentioned problems w this edition will get their attention, or is there a more "direct" contact I should be aware of? Edited June 17, 2021 by bastetly too many to list, I'm a chronic editor.
gregory Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 (edited) They usually answer emails. I buy their decks directly from them, incidentally. The leash. It's - wrong for the meaning.. The Colman Smith flower leash is easily broken - this one isn't. I like a balance of power, myself. Edited June 17, 2021 by gregory
gregory Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 Sorry - I haven't a really TELLING one of our cats - but here's one from alamy that is the kind of pointy forward tuft I mean. If that cat were walking, it would look much like that panther.
katrinka Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 The tuft or cowlick (catlick?) appears to be sticking out of kitty's side (red highlight.) Unless you mean the long, thin piece (blue highlight.) I don't think either would have the same effect as what we're seeing on that panther. But I agree that for Strength, the panther should not be securely leashed. The image doesn't say Strength to me, it says Katherine Hepburn and her leopard in Bringing Up Baby. It only lacks Cary Grant standing nearby looking flustered. 14 hours ago, bastetly said: It looks like it would be a good storytelling deck It absolutely would. The images were created for stories. It's a readable deck, but: those stories are not the same stories that the Tarot tells (as we can see from that Strength card.) We're looking at a mashup of the books Dulac illustrated. If I had the whole pile of books, WITH Dulac's illustrations so I could pinpoint who the characters were and what was taking place, I might...nah. Too much effort for this deck.
gregory Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 (edited) This while chunk - and it does bunch together and stick forward, truly it does. I once had someone ask if one of our queens was a boy !!! Edited June 17, 2021 by gregory

I'm not saying that people should devote great chunks of time to studying pet genitals, but they do need to be more observant. It only takes a second to note that cats and dogs are different. What else are people not seeing? It's a little disconcerting when you consider that they might drive, operate heavy equipment, handle firearms or engage in other activities that can be dangerous if they're in the habit of not paying attention! 😱 And that still looks like hair on that kitten. There's no mistaking it for anything else. Edited June 17, 2021 by katrinka
gregory Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 There would be every chance if the kitten weren't flying through the air, truly there would. It bunches up and points forward,
katrinka Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 Dog penises have a certain weight and wobble that you don't see with fluff. And fur tends to have feathery ends. I don't think they're similar at all.
gregory Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 We have no idea whether that panther's underbits wobble... I shall go try find a better image for you.
katrinka Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 That might help. The shape on the panther is very unfurlike. I didn't want to do this, but: If there was any similarity between that and a tuft of fur, my poor floofy dogs would be mistaken for having penises growing all over them.
katrinka Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 I love this place. We have the most unexpected discussions. 😁

I'll include it in my suggestions for a revised Dulac. I WAS in the mood for a deck buy darn it! Now I've de-enabled myself! and now knowing what I suspected: the cards w the large borders are too small for the art, that GORGEOUS ART. I've emailed LoS and I hope they will respond... Never tried to order fm Italy. I have several decks on hold, waiting for better revisions. Oh wait! The new Primordial Tarot! I'll get that!! God knows I waited a loooong time for it to come back! gregory, I know you have the Origins, but do you also have the newer Primordial?
