I’ve noticed that a lot of forum members like to quote long paragraphs in replies. I was thinking that it’s kind of repetitive. (Don’t get me wrong, I think the quoting is a great feature. ) Could we implement a thing where you can quote a long paragraph, but it shortens it to a box where you can press expand to see more?

Especially when people quote replies with pictures in them. That means the computer has to load them multiple times and it just makes everything slower.

Just a suggestion from me.

I wouldn’t mind that. 🙂

I think it's too easy to just click Quote and bring the entire previous post in when commenting. Personally, I try to parse out only the text I'm referring to, but I'm sometimes guilty of taking the easy way out too.

Also, is all this quoting really necessary?  It's one thing if one is responding to something from several posts ago, but quoting the immediately previous post in its long, picture filled entirety (the kind of posts I often make myself, actually!) just to comment "I agree" or insert an emoji, and then to have two or three more members in turn quote each subsequent post, which now include the original long message, picture(s) and "I agree", emoji, and additional comments...

Yeah, a collapsible box would be helpful!

(Not that I don't get an immodest kick out of my cartoons being shown again and again.)

Members may not be aware yet that they can highlight an area of text (like I just did) and automatically quote just that area in their reply.

I don’t think I have ever seen a feature like that on a forum 🤔. Have you? However, I think it’s important to remember that there are limitations to what we can add or tweak in any forum software. And we cannot expect every member to be tech savvy or to know how (or have the time) to do things in the neatest way possible. Long quotes are present on every forum  so I think that’s something we will have to accept to a certain extent. But it might be possible to stop pictures from reappearing in quotes ( @Little Fang ?).

I think on other forums *trying to recall what other forums I’ve been on* the replies have sub replies. Kind of like twitter where each reply can have people reply to that specific reply.

But on this forum every post only has one big chain of replies.

Yes @Grandma I agree with that. (See what I did there) I don’t do this personally, but I guess some people do. I think it’s unnecessary and it’s a whole other topic we could get into.

I hope everyone begins to be mindful of their quoting! 😄

Me too!

But then again, having to scroll down for a few extra seconds is a very small inconvenience.  Think back to the days when communication was limited to carrier pigeons, pony express and smoke signals.  It would have been a completely different forum back then!

(Silly Grandma - it would have been a quilting bee.  And no, I don't remember quilting bees.  They were actually before my time.)

This also comes down to different personalities 🙂. What one person feel is unnecessary might be part of what makes the forum feel warm and sociable to someone else. Some people will want to have no chatter or no birthday wishes (*cough cough* looking at you @gregory 😋) while others want to have a single forum that covers all their interests and needs. So we can never please everyone but we will always do our very best 😀 (And Little Fang never ceases to amaze me with everything that she can find creative solutions to! ❤️❤️❤️) I really like this new feature. Had no idea it existed, so thank you for this suggestion @ashjey ❤️

(Yes, I had to press quote, not only for intended pun but also to tell you that this joke made me think of that other time where I had to google to find out if you were talking about a car or a condiment. Good times! 😁😁😁😁)

Look at me all you like  Chatter is great. Endless birthday threads - um, no thanks !

One reason I DO often quote the whole thing (though usually not the image) is that there ARE people who carefully edit their original post after the event and a) destroy the continuity and b) do it in purpose to make someone else look bad. No I haven't seen that happen here yet, but I take precautions (actually come to think, raggy, you KNOW of one where I did that for exactly that reason :classic_wink:)

I don't really care for internet birthdays, either.
IRL people taking the time to call or bring you some silly little thing is nice. A big facebook-style crowd of people you only know by a screen name but you really need to thank for taking a moment to think of you is kind of a burden. So is keeping up with hundreds, possibly thousands of internet friends' birthdays and having to worry you may have left someone out and they're taking it personally.

Yes.

One of the forums where I hang out is debate-heavy. It's prudent to quote whole posts in that situation.
But maybe not so much in a "help with a reading" or "show me your kittycats" threaad.

I've seen places where MODS did that to OTHER PEOPLES' POSTS.
I don't expect it to happen here, but yes - there's a reason Prudence is a Virtue.

I think people do it here for 2 reasons.  When you quote someone it shows up in the notifications the same as if you use the @ before a name.  Also, I think people on IPads and phones do it because it's so damn hard to highlight certain sentences.  It's just easy to hit the quote button and go.  When I'm on PC I always use a smaller version of a quote.  When I'm on the IPad, I tend to quote the entire post.

@Saturn Celeste is so right about the phone and iPad thing! I can’t modify quotes on my phone without messing it up completely

Oh I KNOW. This is so true. I have done so myself more than once

It collapses long quotes in a reply and adds a “read more” feature:

If a mod needs to do that, there is usually a very good reason. And they will then also edit your quote of that post. I remember a whole series on AT where the (eventually banned) member posting while very very drunk but not for the first time, unleashed an INCREDIBLE series of foul-mouthed probably actionable in law posts.

But people who edit their posts after you post something else, and then PM you to say how dare you always try to make me look bad (when all I had done was say "you can buy that cheaper here" when they were - incorrectly - determined they were cheaper) NEED to be quoted so that they cannot deliberately mislead, with consequences for other members.

AH - now I see it. Thanks. And I am leaving that pic in the quote because it's so NICE
