An Oracle With Teeth

I have the Enchanted Map, @Barleywine, but I've never used it. Another deck by CBR that I do use is the Wisdom of the Oracle deck. The interpretations include a general Oracle Says section followed by a section for a financial question or a section for a relationship question. The last section is for reversed cards and it's for a  Protection message.

Les Vampires by Lucy Cavendish definitely has "teeth". I've found the interpretations in the guidebook to go way deeper than the keyword on the card initially suggests. The artwork is lovely, but possibly an acquired taste. I think @DownUnderNZer has got this deck, if you'd like another insight into it. 🙂

I just looked at a flip-through of the Wisdom of the Oracle deck. I like its whimsical images, but at first glance its messages seem a bit enigmatic and somewhat "fluffy." I do think I could work with it, though.

Agree with @Starlight The Enchanted Map Oracle is very massmarket, I bought it because people on AT had great readings from it, I feel nothing from it to be truthful, I can't even remember a single card from it. In my opinion, the Earth Magic Oracle is the best of the massmarket oracle range like that, it at least does pagan / wiccan / celtic elements of magic quite well and gives good readings.

My suggestion is the Psycards, they are Jungian archetypes with a medieval theme. Originally published in London in 1980 by Nick Hobson, people used to buy them until the internet by mail order 🙂

A whole lot of authors have published books to go with it, the best of the field seems to be the yellow book " A Journey into the Psyche" by Nick Hobson, I own this and it gives so much on each card but you can just get the deck use it with no reference (it has a cheat sheet in it and there is a study group still on AT). In America buy from this US based site, I think it's the cheapest going. The official site does the UK and Europe really and the U.S shopping costs are insane. Amazon also has it for insane prices. That for me is the oracle with the most bite in my collection

I do like the Earth Magic Oracle, but what I don't like is that the top border takes up 1/3 to 1/2 of the card. I can't quite seem to ignore that. I have the Psycards and like them quite a bit, but decided they aren't right for this purpose. It's funny that Nick Hobson thought I lived near London (I'm in the US) and asked if I wanted to be their web administrator. I'm still interested in getting the book, which was still available from the site the last I looked.

😂 That is funny. I think he is semi retired from his oracle and the website keeps entirely changing in style, I think it's a franchise type operation. The original format for decades of it was wonderful, it had loads of free helpful stuff including meanings for each card and great for users of it. But he seemed to give the website to a lady who made it into a financial business and all free stuff was removed, that was the worst incarnation everything was about making money, buying decks / readings / courses / certified reader. She seems to have gone now, so it seems to be changing hands a lot! He obviously wants someone to take over it all and not found quite the right person yet 🙂 But that explains why you were offered 🙂

You might be able to buy the book from a bookseller for a fairly good price, I have not really searched thoroughly but it's easier to get than the decks are probably.

I probably should have made my intentions clearer. Here is an example reading showing what I'm trying to do with this.

Oh, that poor Thoth.  I see what you mean.

I'm looking for cards of roughly the same size, with at least nominal thematic similarities. I've been using the Oracle of Visions in the mix but I don't really like its "glitzy" images for my purpose, although it has delivered some remarkable insights. I'm looking for a replacement. Perhaps I should just dig out my DruidCraft; its large size has always put me off using it, but it's certainly close to my large-format Thoth. I'm really hoping to find an oracle deck, though; many of them seem to feature larger cards..

I'm probably the wrong one to ask about large format cards, as I tend to avoid them.
I don't know of ANY readily available large format oracle decks that aren't schlocky DV knockoffs.  Your best bet would be to keep a close eye on kickstarter. Every now and then an edgy one pops up.

I’ll suggest two more, that you’ll probably dislike too ☺️: The Supra oracle and The Living wheel astrology cards. The first one could probably work well in that type of reading, but it’s based on jungian psychology so it might not be your thing. The astrology one looks really stunning, more masculine and simplistic, and I think it could definitely add more layers and complement the Thoth in a nice way.

@Barleywine

Have you got the Psycards at all?

Hard one to get now though... perhaps.

One of my top 5 and is one deck that travels with me.

Jung influenced deck and very on to it.

@Starlight    Les Vampires. Yes. Only used that deck once. It wasn't able to do predictive like I wanted.

However, it isn't airy fairy which is a bonus!

Just spotted @DanielJUK - great minds think alike! Obviously we have good taste when it comes to certain decks and what they can accomplish, but this particular one is right up there!

Yes, I have the Psycards and I like them. I looked at Les Vampires. All of the figures remind me of different versions of Wynona Ryder doing Lydia in Beetlejuice.

Both decks are quite nice. I can see lots of uses for the astrology cards, but not to read as cards. I tend not to read tarot psychologically in most cases, so Jungian cards (with the exception of the Psycards) don't serve me too well.

@Barleywine

I like Mel Browns decks.

She is Australian Aborigine so most, if not all of her decks, have an Aboriginal influence in the meanings and very on point when it comes to messages.

Other than that - most decks are the same old same old with that one word meaning the exact same thing no matter what deck - like a self help book.

I like Froud too, but you might find that a bit on the harsh side although very very on the nail as well.

Steve Farmer (?) and Scott Alexander King (?) might be two others to consider as well only they do Animal Spirit Oracles etc. Very very good material to work with!

Les Vampires I wasnt recommending.

Why not just hop on etsy or ebay and grab a replacement Chinese coin? That way you don't have to fool with those unicorn f**t decks, you have something that looks good on the table, and you're not concerned with size and color coordinating. Or use any three nice coins - I use mercury dimes. You just have to remember that tails is "heads" because it's the side with the amount printed on it.

Hmm, with my Chinese coins I just picked one side to represent heads and didn't think too much about it. I'm going to explore your suggestion. I already use dice in some of my spreads, so why not I Ching? New Age mythology most likely postulates that unicorns have perfumed f**ts, so I get your point.

I really like Mel Brown's decks, and it would be a tough choice as to which one to get. I see that they're all available on Amazon for a reasonable price.

When you spread the cards, use this invocation:

"SPEAK TO ME, O TOOTHLESS ONE."

But he wanted something with teeth? So what about:

”I call on thy spirit, great Wisdom Tooth!“

My wisdom teeth became hazmat over 50 years ago, so I doubt they have much bite left, either in fact or in spirit.

It’s obviously not your wisdom teeth you’ll be calling upon. It will be the Great Spirit residing in all wisdom teeth, from the dawn of times. It’s like the archetype of the wisdom tooth, in its most heightened form ☺️

But . . but . . . "as above, so below," right? My "wisdom tooth karma" most likely hasn't been discharged yet and is lurking in the background, waiting for a chance to pounce.

Oh dear, yes - could be. Vengeful teeth spirits... sounds like something out of a horror movie 😅. Best not do it then!

There was a pic of the cards, but a very blurry one. The thing I found most promising is the words in the title: “future fortune” ☺️

This is another great oracle too where certain cards and spots influence the meaning and/or interpretation. I like it when I have the time to work with it which is not a lot, but it is a little gem.

Another one that might be hard to get now though as well.

Mel Brown

I saw three decks on Amazon just now not including the latest one she has out which I will get.

I met her some years back and she is really cool - I did look for her this year actually when I went to a Spiritual Convention, but she wasn't there unfortunately.

I have two of those decks shown in Amazon :The Goddess one and Aborigine dreamtime. And they cost me like US$30 each, but at the time one of them was the newest one out etc. Plus in Australia we seem to pay more for Tarot and Oracles.

About 6 weeks ago, as my niece intends to start buying Tarot and Oracles all of a sudden, I pulled out Mel Brown's decks and a few others to demo what she should be investing in.

Both decks nailed her to a tee and in totally different ways.

I felt one more than the other, but she felt both were on to it probably as she knows herself more. Fair enough. One card was like taking a good look in the mirror really yet she accepted and appreciated what was being put across to her and it resonated 100%.

]So, she is buying Mel Brown.

Mel Brown's Oracles are not airy fairy stuff and her cards say it like it is, but not in a negative way.

The Lenormand would be a bit too much for my adult niece to learn and if I teach anyone in the family - child onwards.

I have my eye on my great niece who is 7 years old and intuitive with a high IQ and very compassionate. Solid memory.

Be seeing little Miss Muffet soon and will put her to the test with her own deck as long as mummy dearest is fine with it. Sushi may have to be a bribe on my part.
