Sometimes it makes sense to just leave for hours and look at it the next day. Or you can ask us here for opinions 🙂 Okay, so my phone takes crap pictures, but here is a close-up of the hand that I've reworked about 5 or 6 times. I'm almost satisfied with it. I like the shadows that show the contours of the bones, but just don't like the knuckles where the fingers meet the hand. It looks like the fingers aren't actually attached, to me, like they pop in or off. So I need to adjust a highlight, I think. Oh, and something about the thumb needs a tweak, but I'm not sure how or where. What do you guys think? Btw, everything else in this section is a preliminary layer, so the shading and background objects will change. Edited January 21, 2020 by geoxena

The Knuckles seem too 'wide' and therefore I think it can give an impression they are not attached. Or they are rather a bit too close to where the finger should start. When I look at my hand there is quite a bit of a distance between the knuckle and where the finger really starts when I have the hand flat out like that. Makes sense? The thumb is maybe not enough defined with regards to the knuckles. Hope I was able to help 😊
Wanderer Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 @geoxenaWell, I'd say that the thumb extends too far back towards the wrist, and looks like it's almost separated from the hand... and although I can see what joy means about the wide knuckles at the bases of the fingers, but that doesn't actually bother me as much. But... the skin colour tones... superb! And the concept, from what I can see... I absolutely love it. This is a card I'm going to adore! 😎
geoxena Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 (edited) Thanks, @joy and @Wanderer! Okay, I think I know what both of you mean - your comments made sense, and are very helpful. The wonderful thing about color pencils is, if you don't press too hard, you can add layer upon layer until you're happy with it. Glad you like what you see so far. I just wanted to upload a teaser, since I'm not ready to show more, but you both prolly grokked what I'm going after here. This is fun! Edited January 21, 2020 by geoxena

geoxena Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Hey, I realized my shadows were all wrong for where the light is coming from and shining on the hermit's hand. So, I fixed it and it looks great. I just hope I can leave it alone now and stop messing with it! Thanks for the critiques, they really helped with shaping the knuckles in the different lighting, too!

gregory Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Lillie used to say that hands were the HARDEST thing to draw. She said, irrelevantly.

Care to add a landscape to my Novice of Water? ~giggles~ I intend to try to tie in the "earth element" into that, i.e. have the chalice with the Novice in a natural earthy setting, perhaps some mountains in the background or some rocks. Hehe! Thank you, but alas, I don't think I could do it justice... 😉 It's got to be your vision. Although it's amazing that we live in a world where we can collaborate on individual pictures from opposite sides of the world... p.s. it's based loosely on parts of Scotland, but before the forests were cut down. And I definitely recommend going there...

Wanderer Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Alrighty... I probably could call it 'finished'! However, I'm wondering whether I should add some subtle colour (for example, in the dragon sign). On balance I think not, but I'm willing to be persuaded... Any other suggestions for last-minute alterations?

You know, though I have never been and do not know if I will ever get the chance, Scotland has a very special place in my heart and I seem to always find myself drawn to it. I suppose it reached to me once again through your card 😍. About my vision ... I have visions forever, just not the drawing skill to make them look like I wish I could! 😆

Any other suggestions for last-minute alterations? When I saw it I thought that a red dragon sign would be very effective. But don’t ask me, I don’t really do colorful art 😋

I would scan it and try adding color in a editing software before touching the real painting 😍
Wanderer Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Thank you all! @joy, yes, that's exactly what I'm afraid of... but this version is safely scanned at 300 dpi (and greater) now, so I wouldn't feel too scared. 8 minutes ago, Raggydoll said: When I saw it I thought that a red dragon sign would be very effective. If we're both seeing that (and @Jeweltoo!), then it's probably crying out for it. Let me do some experiments before taking the plunge... and I promise not to go overboard!

I think adding color in a few key places would elevate your already great card to something wonderfully magical. I'm thinking the dragon, the center of the sky where it's just above the mountains, the flames, and the Stonehenge-like structure at the end of the road. And maybe tiny touches like the road itself and/or the grass alongside it, or the baubles in the figure's hair and atop the walking stick? Just some ideas to take or leave!
