Flaxen Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Here are the two versions of The Rod side-by-side. My other extra is the same Spiral as @Rose Lalonde.
Rose Lalonde Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Thank you, @Flaxen! I like that alternate Tower! Now I've seen them all. And thanks, @KaiNO. I had only seen the ones you posted while I was watching a flip through, so it's nice to get a still shot. 9 hours ago, gregory said: I like the alt Fool better ! It's a nice card. Decan Posted March 29, 2020 Posted March 29, 2020 (edited) Okay, unboxing and first impressions! I received lately (it took a bit long since everything is slowed down currently) the Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling playing cards. For the price (really cheap) the quality is quite decent, it is a 52 cards deck, poker size and vintage looking. Not a disappointment. Actually this deck is old, first published in the US at the end of the 19th century according to what I read. Edited March 29, 2020 by Decan
Royalalbatross Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 OK not really first impressions, as I have had it about a week but here goes: I got my deck of Meneghello Tarocco Soprafino (limited ed. mine is n.1960/2000). Oh boy is this something very different. The cards are made from high quality paper, as opposed to most decks these days being plastic. They are relatively small, and I found out that this is actually the original size. The card stock is thick and sturdy. It definitely feels hand made, in the sense that each card has been cut individually (so not 100% even, but not bad either). The images are very nice and old-fashioned. I have seen a number of people calling the images woodcuts, but they are actually metal engravings with colors applied (tarot de Marseilles were woodcuts). This reproduction also shows some stains and marks from use, I suppose they just scanned an old original deck from a collection somewhere. Very different and I love it. :)

I have a French Tarot Nouveau deck, which contains 78 cards like tarot in general, but also if you take out 26 of the cards you have a normal playing deck with hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs. The trumps (major arcana) are various French scenes everyday from about 100 years ago. Not everyone's cup of tea perhaps, but I bet someone's using it for readings. :)

For the Gypsy Witch actually you don't bother with the playing card insets, just with the verses on the cards (with these sort of decks generally we don't read from the pictures). For this particular deck I think that the playing cards are just there to play poker as an extra (I don't play poker myself though) 🙂 Edited April 29, 2020 by Decan

Those are some highly detailed illustrations! Etchings I assume. Here’s a photo of a sample from my deck. it doesn’t look too similar at first, but looking closer I see many similar compositions in the trumps. Edited April 29, 2020 by Royalalbatross
Grace Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 My Hermetic Tarot Deck ARRIVED!!!! I'm so f...ing excited. The detail in the drawings are beautiful and so interesting... now I need to learn how to use it! I ordered it from Book Depository which has free shipping, but due to COVID-19 it has taken a long time to get here. Feeling a little under the weather today so that quickly cheered me up! I ended up receiving the newer version - which I'm pretty sure is not what was advertised, but I really don't mind, and kind of prefer the asthetic of the black and white box and it's typography as opposed to the yellow front of the original. I haven't bothered to look too deeply into the suggestion that the newer deck has a few minor corrections in one or two cards (don't know if true or not). If it is the case, there would be something cool about owning the original - kind of like a misprinted stamp. Again, it could just be bad information. The first thing I noticed is the size and shape of the cards. I've been using the RWS Centennial pocket sized deck, so the full size will take some adjustment as they feel a little foreign in the hand at the moment. They do however have a lovely slip to them, which will help.
Flaxen Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 I’ve just received my copy of The Arboridium deck which I backed on Kickstarter. As expected, the whole package is beautiful - deck, book, journal, prints and coaster. Some photos:

TheFeeLion Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 Ooo just remembered about this thread! I got my 2nd hand (very lightly used) Witches Tarot the other day. I don't know what made me buy it (aside from the price lol) maybe it was a nudge from somewhere other. It's a bright and colourful deck rich and detailed that comes in a pretty sturdy box with magnetic closure. The cards are shinier than I was expecting which makes them a little slippy (not a bad as some decks which like to run away while you're shuffling though) but they still shuffle nicely. The card stock is a little light but super easy to handle and it's nice and springy too which makes riffling a breeze. I really like the galaxy backs on them as well. The companion book is well done. Each card gets a full page black and white picture and two pages of description and meaning dedicated to it. So for a bibliophile like me it's great. What I've found most surprising about this deck is how well in reads. I've been trialling it out with the Mystery Person game and have been getting a lot of hits! It's been really good for letting my intuition fly! I might just have to give it a go with ISG next month...

RayOfSunshine Posted May 15, 2020 Posted May 15, 2020 Hi all! Firs time poster in this topic, so here goes. I ordered two Tarot decks, and one Oracle deck, the Starseed Oracle deck and it came in this morning. I am absolutely in love by the art and colours of the cards. I already have smudged them (photo is right after smudging) and can't wait to work with them. While smudging I already felt such a great connection. I'm reading the booklet as we speak.
Guest Posted May 16, 2020 Posted May 16, 2020 I got Occult Tarot today. I don't vibe with it as I was expecting but that is likely due to the creator's intended usage of using the cards of that particular deck to summon demons (something I have no belief in at all but appreciate the aesthetics of). Apparently, it can also be used as a regular deck so I will be trying anyway. Nothing wrong with the cards, just the creator's intentions. I bought it for more introspective pursuits, especially the shadowy ones. The book that the deck came with is lazy and kind of useless. In the section on card meanings, it's literally just a picture of the card with what is already on the card describing the domains of the demons depicted. The box it came is pretty. It's red & black. I'll add pics to this later.

Guest Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 @VioletEye I definitely need to look into that when I have money again. I actually had the Daemon "Tarot" at one point (cats destroyed it because it was on my table and I forgot). I found that deck a bit tricky. Either that or I just don't vibe well with oracles. I did do an interview spread with the Occult Tarot, pushing my way through the dissociation that hits when I try to work with it. Even asked if it was chill being used like a regular deck which made both The Sun (Bune) & Page of Cups (Stolas) jump out and I take that as an "absolutely". If I can get my brain to stop freaking out over me working with it, I am sure I can use it and my first impression was misleading.
VioletEye Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 awesome! good luck with your deck, @Jack! sometimes they do come around 🙂
QueenOfSpades Posted May 25, 2020 Posted May 25, 2020 I got the Hush Tarot and Bohemian Gothic Mini Tarot today. I'm sadly not vibing with the Hush Tarot. Maybe I'm not used to using decks that don't revolve around RW symbolism and lots of nature? The art is beautiful though.
Wyrdkiss Posted June 1, 2020 Posted June 1, 2020 Just picked up the Pixiekins oracle to give as a gift to someone, using some Barnes & Noble store credit. It's so damn cute I kept it and purchased another one to give. Art -- 9.5/10 Cardstock / Box / Quality -- 9/10 (for the price) Originality -- 9/10 Message / Intent / impact -- 9.5/10 Can't go wrong with this mass-market oracle. Simply adorbs.
