ashjey Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 What are some fun, casual spreads/questions to ask the tarot? I'm looking for some more practice I can do daily, but I don't want to do the draw one card a day business. I'm thinking 1-3 card spreads (maybeeee 4, but that is stretching it a bit), something light. And none of that morning, noon, evening type spreads. Those just don't interest me at all. Any suggestions?
Katie Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 This is a good topic! I am also in need of input. My thoughts are on drawing cards about other people. Otherwise very much tend to be so very much ME ME ME. Katie
chongjasmine Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 Maybe you can draw cards to ask about your health, your career, your education, your life in general etc?
Esk Posted August 23, 2019 Posted August 23, 2019 If you like this kind of exercices, you can read about events or characters from books, movies, fairy tales, video game etc. You can ask about the next chapter of a book for example, or about the motivation of a character for doing a specific action. You could also pretend that you give advice to a character for hir or her adventure. It's a funy thing to do. It has no consequences and it's just for fun and practise.

That would be fine for some people, but I am not looking on insight for anything about myself right now. I feel if I wanted to ask that kind of question, I would use a bigger, tailored spread.

Wheel of Fantastic Posted August 27, 2019 Posted August 27, 2019 I do a daily three card spread to get a sense of the energies involved. Actually make a choice of several three card spreads. If I know for certain I have a challenging day ahead then I use 1)Root of my problem, 2)Answer, 3)What I resolve to do. If I know there is something I need to focus on then it's 1) Situation, 2)Don't do this, 3)Do this If there isn't anything in particular then it's 1) Situation, 2) Challenge, 3)Answer For good measure I use some Pythagorean numerology to work out the Major Arcana card that will represent the overall meaning of the reading for that day. These spreads aren't sexy but they work very well.
Eamane Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 You can try your hand at world events (there are a couple you can use at the moment =D) and ask yes/no, do/don't, cause/solution type of questions. I know I want to do that and haven't... but I'll start doing it at some point.
Wyrdkiss Posted August 28, 2019 Posted August 28, 2019 I love "what I need to know today" with a 2nd shadow card to the lower left. That card represents portions of yourself that must emerge or those that are sabotaging your progress. One extra can add a lot to it.

I feel if I wanted to ask that kind of question, I would use a bigger, tailored spread. This mood is pretty much why I don't do a daily draw in the normal sense! I tend to work with tarot on a daily basis, but not really in that I pull a new card every day. I tend to pull a card when I feel like I've finished with the energy of the last one, and that might be a day or two, it might be a month. I'll first start with pulling a card and reading it like normal, usually having asked something like "what do I need to be aware of?" or something open like that. Then I'll let the card steep with me for a while - maybe the next day I'll be actively watching out for signs or situations that echo the card in my life. Maybe the day after that I'll be pondering and writing about how this recent card interacts with my Year Card and Birth Cards. Then the next day I'll be looking into the history of the card, and other people's interpretation of it. Then I'll pull that same card out of a bunch of decks and compare and contrast them. Another day, I'll look at how the card interacts with the other cards in the deck that share the number on it. And so on and so on, every day a bit of time with that card until I get that "*bing*DONE" feeling and I move on to the next one. There hasn't been a daily draw question or list of prompts that has held my attention, but this way I do get to fibrous work with my cards and not get bored of it! (even though most people probably would get bored of thinking about the danger card for weeks tbh!)

I think I might give this a try, Thanks!
Nilo Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 (edited) Hi! I also want to practice, and I have been looking for forums or ideas of how to practice too; but it looks like it's not easy to find either forums or facebook groups for that. I read once that you can ask even for what you will talk about on your next phone conversation, and I did that and it worked quite well actually. Edited September 12, 2019 by Nilo
bookshop Posted September 15, 2019 Posted September 15, 2019 Hi, Ashjey! I just want to chime in that I LOVE doing spreads for fictional characters so I second that advice! I also like an inverse of the 'give a tarot card a song' thread — where once a day you pick a song you're into and then ascribe a tarot card to that song based on the lyrics, overall mood, etc. I'm into poetry so I also like to pick a card and write a poem about it. This especially is good for me when I'm getting to know specific decks.
c r y p t i d Posted September 17, 2019 Posted September 17, 2019 Thirding (?) the suggestion for fiction-based spreads, it's such a great low-stakes way to practice -- I do this whenever I'm itching to pull out my cards but don't really have anything going on in my own life that I'd want to read for. @bookshop -- using cards for poetry prompts is also very interesting! I'm not well-versed (ha) in the various poetry styles and technical rules but I've been getting into it more and more lately (a friend introduced me to Mary Oliver and I'm flipping my pancake over her) so this might be something I give a try myself. I'd also want to add onto reading for real world events: if you're into a particular sport, you could read for the outcome of a game / match? @JustPeachy has a football journal on here where she does that very thing, and I'm in love with the idea so much I plan on trying it myself now that hockey preseason has started. Could also work for reality shows where people get voted off / eliminated, if that's what butters your toast. My mom is really into that show the Masked Singer and a new season is starting soon apparently -- I'm thinking of trying to use my cards to glean some extra clues there.
bookshop Posted September 17, 2019 Posted September 17, 2019 @c r y p t i d there are no poetry rules! The only poetry rule is just to write. 🙂

The first card I pulled was 10 of Swords. I kid you not.
PageOfCups Posted September 17, 2019 Posted September 17, 2019 Here's a screenshot of my recording of the "Julius Caesar" reading: I was a bit spooked when I saw the 10 of Swords... Crazy thing is, I fast-forwarded the video so I could get to the spread at random and I just happened to stop right at this point of the video: It's like mind-control or something. Seriously @ashjey, try it! Pretty harmless too.

Don't be so sure that it wouldn't be very accurate! 😛 You'll be surprised. 😄 You could use this exercise to practice refining your spread technique into pinpointing your question and naming your positions. That's a good way to hone readings into becoming more precise, clear and easy to interpret. Edited September 17, 2019 by Grizabella
bookshop Posted September 17, 2019 Posted September 17, 2019 I always get EXTREMELY accurate readings when i do tarot readings of fictional characters, and I think that's because i know the characters so well that I can project whatever I need to into the cards to make them fit. 😄

I also wonder about the Law of Attraction in my readings. Stuff I do for myself is usually pretty positive. And thanks for the mention @c r y p t i d it's nice to have another sports fan about! Looking forward to your journal. 📣⚽🏒 We've got another game tonight! My poor puppy always leaves when mom starts yelling at the TV.
ashjey Posted September 17, 2019 Author Posted September 17, 2019 @PageOfCups wow.. crazy. Do you do post to youtube or anything like that?
PageOfCups Posted September 18, 2019 Posted September 18, 2019 2 hours ago, ashjey said: @PageOfCups wow.. crazy. Do you do post to youtube or anything like that? yeah. speaking of YouTube, you can get a lot of inspo for some non-"me, me, me" readings there! here's a playlist for readings on everything from crop circles, Loch Ness, to the Dyatlov Pass incident: here's one on Marilyn Monroe's pastlife: (SPOILER ALERT: Norma was a dude and she seems to be repeating some sort of karmic cycle & recycles members of her soul group into various members of her family/partners.) of course unless you're connection to the 5th dimension or something it's hard to tell whether you're accurate about who someone was in past-life, but it's super fun and i dig that astrology spread! you should have prior knowledge of whatever you're about to read, though, just so you can tell whether you're on point. i've seen people do true crime readings (filled with "allegedly, allegedly, FEPO") or beauty guru drama without much knowledge of the situation, but readers who do that already have an audience & they can ask their audience in the live chat to fill them in on the details. if you're working alone, just stick with stories you already know. maybe you can actually learn something about yourself without having to ask something like, "WHAT IS MY SOUL PURPOOOOOOSEEE..." LOL. i find that public figures are on put on Earth to teach us something, they're meant to be visible so we can learn lessons from their mistakes or whatnot (otherwise, how else would a recluse learn anything about human interactions if they have no tangible social life). actually, before i got distracted by fictional characters, i was going to suggest you ask, "what's going to happen in the news?" first thing in the morning before you check the morning new, just for funsies.
zedekiel Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 @Esk @bookshop and @PageOfCups would you guys mind sharing any specifics on fictional character spreads? Like the layout of a typical one you've done, 3 card or not? @PageOfCups I'm really interested on the spread you've done for Julius Caesar, do you have the positions written out? It's also wild that you drew that 10 of Swords! So cool!!

So cool!! no i don't have it written out, because that's just the traditional Celtic Cross spread (and i used the original positions). i find that the Celtic Cross will pick up on storylines rather than the character's personality/life in general. for in-depth who-are-they character background read, next time i want to try that astrology spread. or maybe one of the many "profile"-type spread from a 1997 book i was given by someone, "How to Use Tarot Spreads" (Sylvia Abraham).

For example : 1-good thing if X choose this path 2- bad thing if X choose this path 3- advice for X I've also tried no positional spreads just to see the developement of a story, i used the cards as chronilogical events. So far I've not experimented more developped spreads for characters and stories
