I'm at a loss. I really am. I'm so used to the RWS and more intuitive decks that I'm legit scared to pick up my TdM because I just can't understand it! I've been slowly browsing through this forum for definitive information but Tapatalk is a bit more complicated to find what I'm looking for. So what am I looking for? Gods only know. All I know is that my TdM has been haunting my dreams and that I recall a post here discussing the deck in general but no recollection of who posted it or where it was located. If anyone here, knows how to read them, knows what the pips mean, or knows of any reliable English book sources to learn this deck, I'd greatly appreciate the inf…

Lo Scarabeo seems to be mining the same 1880s deck based on the 1835 Soprafino deck by Carlo Della Rocca, and I'm getting confused. The Lo Scarabeo Classical is mostly the same as Lo Scarabeo's Ancient Italian Tarot, with minor redrawings of some faces, some recoloration of garments, and the Classical has that wide left border with the card name repeated in several language that Lo Scarabeo sometimes does. (I like the look of the Ancient Italian deck, but not the redrawn faces.) (And I read on a blog that "the original Della Rocca deck was itself based on a deck which has also been reproduced with minimal changes by Lo Scarabeo as ‘The Ancient Tarot of Bologna…

I just want to anyone who has a passion for the Marseille. I haven't explored the system at all, but I shall do so in the future. I've read that the best books for beginners would be The Way of Tarot by Alejandro Jodorowsky, Tarot - The Open Reading by Yoav Ben-Dov, and Marseille Tarot: Towards The Art of Reading by Camelia Elias. So yeah, if I were just a novice and I wish to start a deep study of the Marseille, do you think these three books would be enough? Or would their teachings be so divergent that I'd only end up getting gob-smacked? Which of the three would you most recommend, or again would you urge us to get all three? Are there other authors you'd advise…

Hello tarot fam! This may be old news, but I haven't seen it posted here. Books-A-Million has Mary Packard's TdM kit for $24.95. This looks to be the same one that came out a few years ago, and is currently listed on Amazon for over $80, but it's been repackaged in a box similar to her Golden Tarot (Visconti-Sforza). It says it's still a reproduction of the Madenie TdM, and has the book and bag in it. I'm not sure if this was a well-received variant, but I figured I'd pass the info along. The BAM near me had four on the shelf on Friday. I may grab one and check it out; if so, I'll probably leave a review here or on my blog. For those of you who don't have a BA…

Since a few years back, there exist a Marseille deck printed by Lo Scarabeo under the name Marseille Tarot. It is the fruit of cooperation between Anna Maria Morsucci and Mattia Ottolini. I've been aware of the Marseille subset of tarot decks since back in the 1980s, but what was available then was the post-1970s version of Grimaud's marseilles deck in very dark blue, which makes the lines difficult to distinguish. I didn't warm up to marseilles decks until CBD Tarot became available, because, in that one, the lines are easily distinguishable, and the colour scheme is presumably closer to the original one My question is, when someone new to marseil…

Everyone knows Caitlin Matthews' name. Her new book, Untold Tarot, hit the bookstores in September. It contains history of the Marseille tarot and how the reading style evolved. She uses several different Marseille decks for illustration. Discusses each major trump card and how to read the pips. Offers different methods of reading including 3 or 5 cards up to tableaux size, including use of houses, and much more. This is THE definitive book to learn or expand your knowledge of Marseille tarot reading. Here's a great review of her book by the Card Geek.

I don't need this. I have plenty of TdM-type decks. OTOH, I don't have a Besancon. And Mr. Valenza probably thinks I've forgotten him, since I haven't ordered anything in a good while. He shows incredible restraint here. Nothing is changed, no demons, banana boobs or bat wings. Just Bensancon: https://deviantmooninc.com/products/the-resurrected-kirchnerbesancon-tarot-1850?variant=32335932391495&goal=0_4f694d0d2d-38b75df2e7-202162773&mc_cid=38b75df2e7&mc_eid=44e147761a

On the Use of White and Pink/Flesh Colors in the Tarot de Marseille This is a long post. Here is the TLDR version: The use of white and pink in the Tarot de Marseille, especially the Conver deck, is kind of a big deal. I have been noodling with these ideas for a while. I am presenting them here in draft form and invite feedback. The numbers in parentheses are footnotes. There are notes at the very bottom of the post. I have also posted the essay in my nascent blog, Dispatches from the Cosmic Command Post. ~~~ A great many Tarot de Marseilles (TdM) decks produced in the mid-18th century depict the “pr…

I just acquired the Playing Marseille deck. It nicely bridges the gap between TdM and faro playing cards. I'm quite liking it as a reading deck. Over the years, I've been using playing cards for reading more and more (and using tarot less and less). But this deck might bring me back into the tarot fold.

Wanting to get beyond the standard Golden Dawn ways of reading pip cards, I’m looking into the numerological Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis method described by Knapp in the Knapp-Hall LWB [1929]. Has anyone out there ever tried this? It goes like this: each suite has a keyword: Love for Cups, Hatred for Swords, Enterprise for Scepters, and Fortune for Coins. Knapp breaks down 9 of the 10 pips into 3 groups of 3: 1, 2, 3 —COMMENCEMENT 1….Commencement of Commencement 2….Opposition of Commencement 3….Equilibrium of Commencement 4, 5, 6 — OPPOSITION 4….Commencement of Opposition 5….Opposition of Opposition 6….Equ…

I very very rarely mark my cards, but can I do this for the Marseille or is this considered verboten? I have some readings to perform this weekend so halp!

It's the El Verdadero Tarot De Marsella by Kris Hadar. My deck in Spanish, made in Mexico. Really nice cards, shorter than other TdM's, but wider. A nice feel to them, shuffle easily. A real book, all in Spanich but I don't read those anyway, but I will try the spread in there. Color on the cards is old fashioned/antique as is the box. It appears these are made by V&S. I don't see any tarot cards by them anywhere, but I could be wrong. Research shows these first came out in the '90's and they were meant to be an exact reproduction of TdM's from 1594. None of the PIP cards have numbers which I like. Thats different. There's nothing overwhelmingly different about t…

I bought this deck today, the Tarot del Toro, and it is based on the TdM. I've only used RWS based decks before, so I'm a little confused. I get that the pips are read mostly numerologically with the suit, and this guidebook does tie in elements, but the descriptions in the guidebook for the numerology differ greatly from other TdM descriptions I've read. Example: all is fine until we get to the 6s. He relates the 6s to frustration, being unable to cope with the conflict of the 5s. Then the 8s are all about defeat. A specific example in the guidebook is the 8 of discs, which he interprets as possible bankruptcy or major money losses. …

I found out casually this deck lately, "Le Tarot des Confinés" (i.e "the Tarot of the Confined") 😷 I post the video below. The review is in French so you can just put the sound off and watch what it is about. Of course I don't recommend this at all, but it's an oddity! ETA: on the box (yellow circle) what it is written is that on the price of the deck, 2 Euros will by given to hospitals, I'm not sure if it's serious though 🤪

Hello. Here are 11 pages of coins from various Tarots de Marseille in my collection (sharper picture here : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZFhrFgBU-7vX71eyQvKty1WoZgiVjjuq/view ) It's interesting to see them side by side because it shows how dark some decks can be. The picture has been adjusted so that the colours are as close as possible as the real colours on the cards. Of course, what you see depends a lot on your display device. But if you've got a high quality monitor set in sRGB, what you see is very close to what's on the cards. 0 - This card (the Lover) comes from an unknown Grimaud deck (it's written on the top left). I don't have the Pa…

Some years ago on AT we had a little group who would take turns posting 3 cards from a TdM or other historical deck together with a question. The person posting the cards would interpret them first and then other people would chime in with their takes. The beauty was that any method was welcomed as it was useful to see how messages were similar or different. The original thread can be viewed here: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=165217 I’d really love to do it again. Would anyone else like to join me? [emoji4]

Sipa. Arcane Le Soleil What have been your experiences with this card? Does it always show positive meanings as often expected? Or have you noticed that at times it shows more than we can see? As we know it, light can also be blinding, and might as well confuse us. The Sun has recently showed up as the central card during a meditation on a client's relationship. All good, right? Except that this lady had told me that she had been struggling with her marriage for the past year, and that she was already prepared to move out. As I was doing the spread, the first thing that drew my attention was that the hands of the children implied that they were fighting, …

The Surrealistic Card game of Marseille. The Marseille Game. The Jeu de Marseille is an surrealist variant of the Tarot de Marseille created in March 1941 by artists in exile at Villa Air-Bel in Marseille . In August 1940, the American journalist Varian Fry (1907-1967), a hero who saved between 2000 and 4000 Jews arrives in Marseille as a representative of the Emergency Rescue Committee (American Rescue Committee). His mission was clear and very important for the future of the world: Allow personalities artistic, political or scientific, under the threat of the application of Article 19 of the Armistice Agreement which stipulates the deliver…
