I'm fine with your lovely ant! Thanks for asking. :D. It's just the big fat black ants that I used to have nightmares about! Yours reminds me of a science fiction book I read as a kid, and enjoyed, so pleasant memories. No terrible triggers! Lol

Grandma Posted February 4, 2020 Posted February 4, 2020 So this is what I've got so far, still some rough edges and so forth. The arrangement of the Pentacles is meant to kind of follow the shape of the man's body and their borders are the color of his hair. Notes on concept and art are most welcome. The last batch was valuable. Although I have a small but loyal following as a PowerPoint cartoonist in the forum (hee hee!!), I am far from an artist and I appreciate the help from those who are.

geoxena Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 (edited) Sneak peak at partially done Nurturer of Earth. Still a lot of coloring to do (that snake needs some bright colors - there is so much green and brown in the drawing already), but thought I'd be a tease once again! She is rising up from a mountain (essentially her "skirt"), and her hair will be made of tree branches. Sorry for the low-res photo. I wish my phone took better pics. I think you've got a very interesting insight into the card and it can be approached "cold" as it were, letting intuition find meaning, but the card text is going to be sol valuable as well. The colour of the card and the attitude of the man make me "feel" the 5P energies, and the details in each of the pentacles are a feast for the intuition. :)

I love this concept - it reminds me of the Tarot Grand Luxe Empress. The Nurturer of Earth and Empress have very similar essences, don't they? And your art is, as always, outstanding. 7 minutes ago, Starlight said: I love it! Okay, no more changes, just cleaning up and I'm done! Shall we meet up in the secret room which has been exceedingly un-moderated lately (hint hint @Raggydoll)?

I was playing with an idea for the Five of Water a little while ago. I always look first in any deck at the Five of Pentacles, Five of Cups, Nine of Swords and Hermit. (If there are any therapists among us they are probably murmuring "poor Grandma"....)

But, I should've stated that the bird I include in my drawing will be depicted flying. So, flightless birds won't work. I was thinking eagle, crow, raven, grackle, owl, swan, crane, and some shore birds. I know that some of those do appear in decks for mostly the Air element. I also found some references to bluebirds and wrens as connected to Earth element in tarot and ancient symbolism. Out of those, which resonates most as "earthy" to you? Any other flying birds you can think of? Edit: maybe a brown-headed cowbird or woodpecker! I actually sighted two red-headed woodpeckers cavorting in a tree right near me yesterday. Hmm! Okay, I don't know if I'm too late, but I'm a bird nerd, and I would urge you to consider any bird from the Mimidae family: thrashers mostly. Because they like to dig into the earth with their beaks and kick up dust with their feet. Grouse and Killdeer like to burrow into the earth to nest. Also, there's a beautiful legend of the Hermit Thrush, which is usually spotted in tangles of branches and on the ground. You can Google that to see if it fits your card (which I can't remember right now, ha) Woodpeckers to me are definitely earthy too. They seem to be saying: keep going, keep working, keep pecking away.

Several people suggested the wren, which I mentioned, because it stays pretty much on the ground and in bushes. I found a great photo of a house wren in flight that I can use as a model. I do still like the woodpecker idea, too, and will definitely look at thrushes. Thanks again!

Drawing has always been such a personal thing to me, something with which I occupied myself during difficult times in my life, so putting it out there in the world is a very big deal for me - even though I always wanted to. And yes, there have been several moments when I felt like I was working on the Empress card. They're very similar, but I feel such an Earth Mother vibe from Nurturer of Earth. I see the Empress as more self-indulgent, sitting around gorging on chocolates and the like.
geoxena Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 (edited) Oh, @Grandma, I meant to give you feedback on your card. I think it's great! My only issue with it is that it's hard to see the family in that central yin-yang. I'm concerned that one might not be able to see what the image is when reduced to card size. Can you make the image larger, within the symbol? And maybe zoom out a tiny little bit on the lonely guy in the same yin-yang, because I can't really tell he's alone. Like, he needs a little space around him, while the family needs to take up more space. That's what I see, anyway. I hope I'm not being too nitpicky. I think everything else in your card is ready for prime time! Edited February 5, 2020 by geoxena

It IS important how the tougher themes are depicted in a deck, it sort of gives you a good idea of what the rest will be like. Because if there is nothing heavier to balance out the lighter then the deck can bli a bit too flat for my personal tastes. I hope you do end up creating multiple cards for this deck!

This is so interesting because now that I am outlining my own deck I am really contemplating the balance between nurturers (I do love that title and will likely keep it i my personal deck too) and the Empress. So I am probably going to rename the Empress and drop the mother-emphasis from that card. There is so much more to her than that and I feel like I have an idea that might work well... But that is to be seen later in my HER-thread! 🤗

Grandma Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 @geoxena you are not nitpicky one single nit! How's this - the old and the newest. I think I'll face the old guy the other way again and should I make his background gray? Your help has really improved this Pentacle. I'm having so much fun!

I say that you can sign up for a card as soon as this one feels finished to you. There is still so much time left to do the write up and make any adjustments. So you go claim that second card!

On the left pentacle it almost looks like the man is eavesdropping or trying to squeeze his way into the cozy family scene. It looks cute! 😊 But the other one would work great with a grey background, for sure. I love that the couple is made more visible too. If I could choose then I would have the man like on the left pentacle and the couple like on the right one.
Arania Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Ok, the first one it is then. I have been thinking about changing the curtain color and/or the columns. As for the woman, I tried to make her and the throne bigger, however, the compass in the background gets obstructed then unless I shift her off the middle, which is not a good thing, and it is a rather important symbol for me. I am considering forgetting about curtain and columns completely,as the throne alone is already imposing.
