Tarot Decks

Does anyone know what deck this beauty is from?

So, I would like to start a small collection of tarot and oracle decks. You all know the good decks way better than I, so I need your help. I have set aside money to buy 1 deck (maybe 2) a month. I have some guidelines regarding taste and budget, but I am pretty open to ideas. I’ll update if I buy one you all suggest. I am on a budget, so $20-25 is the max I can spend per month. This pretty much means I am limited to mass market decks. 😞 I generally am not big on fairies, unicorns, mermaids, etc. I will consider them if the decks is really good though. We’re nearing the end of another decade and it got me thinking of the decks published during it. 2010-2019 was the decade where I did the bulk of my collection buying. It seems to have been a decade of real explosion in the amount of new decks on offer. With that in mind, are there any decks from this decade which you think are the new classics? Any which will date quickly? Some of the more innovative decks which spring to mind are Tarot of the Holy Light and Tarot of the Silicon Dawn - both changed the structure of what we think of as ‘tarot’ and brought interesting new elements. Well, my Anieth Stone Tarot arrived. Unboxing? Well, no, there was no box, only a rather tethered and rumpled padded envelope 😞 I am rather dismayed at its general condition! The box, the cards were in is pretty smushed out of shape. The box also, when straightened out as far as that still works, does not really fit the deck, it is a wee bit too short and quite a bit too wide.....?? A.E. Stone stuffed a piece of cardboard into the gap, but that has now crumpled up and messed up several cards. 2 pamphlets, that came with it are crumpled. I'm addressing my query to anybody here who regularly reads with more than one tarot system. By that I mean the RWS, Thoth, Marseille, etc. What are the strengths of each particular system? How do you choose which one to read with, at any given time? I am only familiar with the RWS system, but always wondered about the others. I'm not sure I want to spend the remaining years of my life (I'm 76 now) learning a new system if it's only going to show me what the RWS system already does. However, if there is a lot to be gained by learning another system, then maybe I should! 🙂

So I am on the search for a new RWS deck since I've grown more interested on it. I looked at the online store of the only shop that I know of in my country that offers a variety of tarot decks, and I saw the Pamela Colman Smith Lo Scarabeo, and the photos were showing the one with the very vivid colours and typewriter font. Now, this deck, as far as I know, has been discontinued and replaced with a new version that has the more classic colours and a slightly different back, but goes by the same name. For me, it's the Universal Waite I got about 13 years ago in a trade on AT. I traded an edition of the Bohemian Gothic (remember the printing that some decks had red spots? I got TWO of them) for a Universal Waite deck, the one that was printed in Belgium. It was used, but in good shape. I LOVE the Bohemian Gothic, I now have a first edtion and would never trade it. BUT the one actual deck I've had the longest, UNI WAITE. I had decks before that, but they were traded away.

Need is definitely in quotes because I have 367 decks. 😼 Right now one of them is the newish Lo Scarabeo Once Upon a Time Tarot. It's ok. Because I'm an old fogie, I'm not enamored of the fantasy artwork, but I thought I'd give it a try for the theme. Well, it has tales for the majors, not all of which I'm familiar with, and just fantasy creatures for the minors, including courts (dragons, mermaids, fairies, mushroom cap people). Which decks do you see as the opposite of sweetness and light decks? Just your night vs your day decks. For me, just the Bohemian Gothic. Don't see as scary dark, just the opposite of sugar sweet.

I've never been much of a deck collector ... limited space. But after moving to larger digs ... I recently started collecting. Yes, the flip-throughs save me from buying decks I won't ever use ... but I still might purchase a deck thinking it will be great to read with ... and nothing. Then another deck I feel hesitant about ... and BAM! Instant rapport. Curious, right? I have instant rapport with some decks I didn't expect ... and NO rapport with some decks I thought I'd love. i'm sort of wondering if there's a collector's advice thread floating around here anywhere, or if anyone else would be interested in starting one? (I joined the tarot collectors forum but it seems a bit advanced and updates rarely.) I sometimes feel like i'm completely clueless when it comes to discerning what decks are valuable and why. For instance, I just apparently lucked out and found a $65 copy of the III Millennium on ebay (a deck I've been kind of obsessed with since @Saturn Celeste suggested it as a good deck for me a while back). Dancing_moon just began sign-ups for our Forum's inaugural TdM circle this February. Tbh I haven't worked much with the Marseille system before. I wanna flex those divinatory muscles tho, and what better way to do that than by joining circle exchanges. So don't hesitate to jump in whatever your proficiency level is! The air is getting nippy, autumn's just around the corner and before you know it, you're already taking your fall decks out for a spin. So yeah, which decks are you planning to use this season? I am not sure if this is in the right place or not, but I am at my wits end with trying to remove the heavy scent on a beautiful deck of tarot cards that I was gifted years ago. Literally YEARS--we are talking 2017 or 18, I think! I LOVE the cards, but I cannot use them due to my allergies and asthma. So, I did buy charcoal in bags that was recommended to me by one other friendly tarot reader and I put the tarot cards in various plastic bags with all the charcoal bags that I had to purchase (so not 1 bag to 78 cards--more like 5 cards per bag with one charcoal bag--so I have a LOT of charcoal bags now...) Baba studio just wrote on their Instagram that the bohemian gothic is very nearly sold out, so I thought I’d mention this here in case anyone has been thinking about purchasing it. I’m not sure if they will make another edition as they have been talking about making plans for (at least part time) retirement. EDIT: As I just wrote in my last post, they are taking pre-orders for a reprint of the guidebook. It is a limited thing and only pre-order. If you're destined to be stranded on a desert island and you can do nothing to avert your fate BUT you can prepare for it by packing at most five (5) decks in advance, which would you bring with you? The only rule is that you must have at least one Tarot and one non-Tarot deck - the other three may be any deck at all. You may also bring two cartomantic books with you if you like. ^-^ Note: I know bringing decks and books in a survival situation sounds quite impractical, but just humor me lol. After all, this is a Tarot forum. :))

To readers who have metallic decks, i.e. those with metal-foiled images on the cards themselves and not just the edges: which ones do you like to work with? I'm on the hunt for decks with a sense of humour, be it in the guidebook or in the cards themselves. Are there any decks that you thought would be serious but surprised you? Any that straight out the gate made you giggle?

I know nothing about this except the attached picture, and that it is supposed to be released in June 2018. This one won't be for me...I'm not a big TV person so I know a lot of the references will be lost on me. (I already don't know two of the shows in this picture!) But I'm sure a lot of people will love this!

Which deck would you recommend as my second deck? I am currently now using a standard RSW, and it is great. It works with the little handwritten book of all my mum's tarot secrets. But I think perhaps I would learn from getting a second deck. Do you have any recommendations? I see that Wildwood is very popular, and it is very instagram friendly so it would look good on my etsy listings, but I just don't feel the imagery. Hello, everyone Do you have a comfort deck? A deck that you go to when you want a soothing, gentle reading that you know will calm you and let you know that everything will be all right? A deck that just lifts your spirits? Or a deck that makes you feel better just by holding it (or is that just me?). Mine are the Hanson-Roberts Tarot and the Happy Tarot. The Hanson-Roberts was my first deck, so it feels like an old friend. It's artwork is gentle, with soft pastels, and I know I'll always get an encouraging reading from it. The Happy Tarot is the lift-my-spirits deck - when I'm feeling down, I pull it out, and it always makes me smile.

Note: This thread applies ONLY to authentic decks ... "cheap" meaning mass market or sale prices from reputable vendors. It does NOT include counterfeits [which is a different topic] So I am getting a LOT of use from my $20 Devine Deco deck. It has crappy card stock and a crap box ... but I LOVE the deck. I have 2 copies of RWS Centennial Edition in a tin which I use all the time. I bought 10 of them on super sale when they were $11 each and gave all away as gifts except for the last 2 which I kept and use frequently. I have a similar mini RWS indie deck which was $40.
