Hello TDM folks, Currently trying to dip my toe into the TDM pool, though I'm a RWS native. However, there are a lot of options, and I don't really seem to understand why I should favor one over the other. My only request is that I can get it somewhere other than Amazon, since I'm trying to reduce my use of that site. Best, Babelite

Link: https://tarot-de-marseille-heritage.com/english/historic_tarots_gallery.html (scroll down) Whether this truly is Mlle Lenormands handwriting or not is still up for debate. But it’s definitely an interesting deck! I believe it will be made available soon.

Below the very beginning, maybe the text will be moved towards a special thread? I don't know. Okay stay tuned! Tarot de Marseille Below a translation of the words annotated on the second deck mentioned, the one which belonged to Paul Marteau and that we can find here at the BNF: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b10543303s.item I kept the typos (there are a few unless we wrote these words that way in the past and grammar evolved, it’s possible too). I didn’t translate a few titles like Le Mat and Le Bateleur (Le Bateleur is as times translated as The Juggler but he isn’t exactly a juggler, actually we have the word “jongl…

First, to define a Tarot de Marseille deck... http://l-pollett.tripod.com/cards43.htm "The pattern named after the city of Marseille (southern France) is the most well-known in the world, up to the point of being often considered 'the mother of all tarots', the classic version of this kind of deck. Indeed, it was not the earliest one to be created, and it would be more correct to think of it as the most popular and long-lasting pattern among the several varieties that flourished from the second half of the 15th century to present, some of which did not last very long, or were confined to more restricted geographic areas. The same name 'Tarot of Mar…

It turns out the Trionfi della Luna was my gateway to jumping into the TdM. I’ve been reading through many of the topics here over the past couple weeks to understand how to read the pip cards better, and that has invariably lead me deeper into learning about the TdM in general. It’s so rich! I just finished Tarot: The Open Reading and I really enjoyed his process and tips for reading the cards. I splurged a little and have some decks coming my way. (Warning: Enabling?) I ordered the CBD Tarot, the Flornoy Noblet, and, the one I might be most excited about, the strange and wonderful Bacchus Tarot (again, following links in the topics here I got to: https://the…

Some years ago on AT we had a little group who would take turns posting 3 cards from a TdM or other historical deck together with a question. The person posting the cards would interpret them first and then other people would chime in with their takes. The beauty was that any method was welcomed as it was useful to see how messages were similar or different. The original thread can be viewed here: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?t=165217 I’d really love to do it again. Would anyone else like to join me? [emoji4]

I was spending some time looking at a few of my historical decks and got out some cards to compare. Most of my historical decks are stored away but these ones were at hand. The top row are: Mamanmiyuki, Tarot de Marsella and CBD TdM Bottom row: Vieville and Noblet What I love is how the same card looks so different. The Mamanmiyuki and CBD versions are smiling and look quite approachable. The Marsella Queen looks a little bored. The Vieville looks a bit grumpy to me while the Noblet gives off quite an authoritative air. The latter two don’t look like ladies you want to mess with. [emoji4] This is one of the great attractions for me in collecting the repr…

I bought this deck today, the Tarot del Toro, and it is based on the TdM. I've only used RWS based decks before, so I'm a little confused. I get that the pips are read mostly numerologically with the suit, and this guidebook does tie in elements, but the descriptions in the guidebook for the numerology differ greatly from other TdM descriptions I've read. Example: all is fine until we get to the 6s. He relates the 6s to frustration, being unable to cope with the conflict of the 5s. Then the 8s are all about defeat. A specific example in the guidebook is the 8 of discs, which he interprets as possible bankruptcy or major money losses. …

Hey guys I'm looking into a nice authentic TDM deck to use and to gain an understanding into this school of thinking. I have narrowed it down to three decks, two of which are held in high regards one of which I am having trouble to identify but it looks really nice, limited edition, but is it authentic to the time. @katrinka I would love your input on this. Here are the decks First 2 images is the deck I can't find info on But I really love the look of it! This is Jodorowsky's Deck I have his book This is Yoav Ben-Dov's deck So…

Hi all, I'm ready to venture into TdM and have seen someone online selling all these TdM decks. I've tried to check out individual cards to see which version I like best, but I had to give up. They are all beautiful and interesting. I was tempted to just get the replica of the olderst, but that one has rough printing quality, wich is beautifully preserved in the modern copy of course, but the younger ones are possibly easier to read with because they are a. bit clearer, also the coloring of the clothes and objects is better, which is important for the interpretation, as I have already learned in my beginner studies. Tough choice. …

I see we're allowed to post stuff from Aeclectic. I don't know if whole posts can be copied, but this is one that I made once, and I'd really love to continue this topic if anyone is interested. (I was "Diana" on Aeclectic eons ago). And if I don't copy the whole post, the discussion can't continue as is needs to have the original introduction. ************************* There are two fathers in the Tarot. IIII and V. (Actually, there are three fathers. The Hermit is a father too, but of another nature). See, they even follow each other sequentially. First… we are taught where out limits are. The Emperor teaches us how to behave in socie…

I’ve just noticed that the Queen of this suit is actually labelled ‘Reyne de Baston’ which I think makes her Queen of the fight. I can’t imagine this is a misprint given Dr Ben-Dov’s care in recreating the Conver deck, so I’m wondering what the significance is?

Hi, I recently watch the TV Series "War & Peace" (2016) - a very faithful adaptation from Tolstoy masterwork. In the last episode, one of the hero Pierre Bezhukov is consulting cards. Can someone help me identifying the exact deck here ? Thanks, N. Hel

I just want to anyone who has a passion for the Marseille. I haven't explored the system at all, but I shall do so in the future. I've read that the best books for beginners would be The Way of Tarot by Alejandro Jodorowsky, Tarot - The Open Reading by Yoav Ben-Dov, and Marseille Tarot: Towards The Art of Reading by Camelia Elias. So yeah, if I were just a novice and I wish to start a deep study of the Marseille, do you think these three books would be enough? Or would their teachings be so divergent that I'd only end up getting gob-smacked? Which of the three would you most recommend, or again would you urge us to get all three? Are there other authors you'd advise…

Good evening all! I recently felt the itch to get back into more historic decks and stumbled across this deck. I did search the forum but it doesn’t seem to have had much discussion in its own right. It’s not *technically* a TdM but the author has aimed to delve into the history of tarot in creating it (ie pre Golden Dawn interpretations). I absolutely love the art style and consistent colour coding of the suits (even though the choice of fiery red for Swords and deep blue for Batons seems unusual, it actually works for me somehow, even though the Batons are still about willpower and so, fire!) I only just received the deck and its compan…

How do you guys tell whether a pip is reversed or not? I can tell with coupes and most of the despees, but the deniers and bastons leave me scratching my head. I very very rarely mark my cards, but can I do this for the Marseille or is this considered verboten? I have some readings to perform this weekend so halp!

On February 7, @fire cat pickles gave us a heads-up that a 3rd edition of the Yves Reynaud Pierre Madinié 1709 was in the offing. I’ve been checking frequently… and, today I see it’s there! https://www.tarot-de-marseille-heritage.com/boutique/tarot-pierre-madenie-1709-p-30.html?osCsid=447ecd04de20e269e017fb3a7a9532fd I emailed Tarot de Marseille Heritage twice asking if a new edition would be coming out soon, and never heard back, so I went ahead and got a 1st edition from eBay at what I believe was a fair price. But I’m really glad to see this: I’m a bit of a Conver fanatic, but I bet if you polled historical TdM aficianados, the Madenié would be …

I don't need this. I have plenty of TdM-type decks. OTOH, I don't have a Besancon. And Mr. Valenza probably thinks I've forgotten him, since I haven't ordered anything in a good while. He shows incredible restraint here. Nothing is changed, no demons, banana boobs or bat wings. Just Bensancon: https://deviantmooninc.com/products/the-resurrected-kirchnerbesancon-tarot-1850?variant=32335932391495&goal=0_4f694d0d2d-38b75df2e7-202162773&mc_cid=38b75df2e7&mc_eid=44e147761a

I bought Alejandro Jodorowsky's tarot book, which concentrates on TdM, hoping for more insight into reading my Ancient Italian Tarot. It's not TdM but it does have unillustrated minors (pips). I was not much helped. Although the book has extensive chapters on the courts and numbered cards, the vast majority of example readings in the book were trumps-only. Which seemed to confirm what I've read about TdM readers in the past - in practice, the majority of them read trumps only. So this is my proposal, which I'm framing as a modest and therefore at least somewhat satirical one. If you want to begin reading TdM or other historical decks, throw away everything tha…

Hi over the last year I have been getting more interested in the open reading way of approaching the major arcana. I have found for me that it gives me greater insight when reading. So I wondered what peoples thoughts and ideas were on this method of reading.

Hello all! I was a longtime member of Aeclectic who recently got back into tarot in order to learn to read the Tarot de Marseille, and I joined this forum because it appears to have more active discussion of the topic than many others. I look forward to learning from all of you and helping out where I can. Speaking of, I hope that I am posting this in the right place... I was wondering if anyone could help me brainstorm useful spread positions when reading with TdM. I know that many traditionalists dismiss the use of explicit positions and read lines of three to seven cards, and though I've experimented with that a little, I'm interested in creating and workin…
